Part of the reason for Facebook's cultural primacy is that it gets consumers to voluntarily submit information to be profiled and marketed to. That's why it's so "brilliant" and such a big money maker. |
yeah i guess so. i just checked my facebook. nothing new, except my brother posted a picture of the whiteboard that the maintenance guy installed in his cubicle yesterday
...UPSIDE-DOWN! hahah!!! |
it does bother me that my news feed is filled with ads for New York Giants merch and dating sites with pictures of women "in my area" i recognize from my soft core porn collecton. More than one has featured Denise Milani.
it bothers me that if you "like" Fight Club some 7 years ago, you get an insipid thing about how you are not your facebook profile (get it get it) and 500+ people "like" it, irony free. |

SERIOUSLY GUYS WE HAVE TO KILL THIS THING
|
I find Facebook a fantastic way to stay in touch with my friends in other states/countries
|
i think you pretty much ignored all the stuff i wrote about how lazy that is
|
i just use netphoria for that
|
i mean in 1975 you'd have to stay in touch with your friends by making an effort and now i just add them on face book! I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT
 |

apples and oranges. but times they are a changin. i'm not saying i like the evil parts of FB but i'm willing to put up with them (for now. i've been contemplating deleting my profile and making a new one just for correspondence) because it is a great tool to stay in touch. lazy? maybe. but in 1975 most people only kept in touch with a handful of friends. it was simpler, and keeping in touch was almost mandatory. but now people travel a lot and move a lot and meet many many more people in their lifetime. it's nice to be able to have a way to connect with those people when you want/need to. it's why people love the internet so much. I'm still a very avid post card-sender, but a 20 min chat with my crush in Germany is nice, too. I live far away from a lot of my friends and family. it's nice to be able to share photos and updates with family members and friends when i'm far far away. a lot of people actually really appreciate it. It's also wonderful to be able to keep in touch with the people I meet from far far away. if that means that FB knows where I am and that i like taco bell....i'm okay with it. there are worse ways to be in the system, and there are plenty of other ways that your information gets passed around. i guess it's just personal preference on how to fight your own infowar battle. and this is coming from that kid who you all get annoyed with for ranting on about how 'off-grid' i want to be. |
yeah so what i couldn't play skyrim maybe i'd do something productive with my life

you can do all of this with e-mail, which is not proprietary. or fuck how about talking to them on the phone or handwriting a letter and ******* pictures. I mean shit. Seriously, all of this is justifying laziness like being a lazy friend is socially ok now because facebook. |
I hate Facebook that's why I use Twitter
