Out of Silversun Pickups, The Joy Formidable and Yuck.....

Which band is the most creative?
Which band do you think will have the most success?
Which band has the best musicianship?

soniclovenoize 12-27-2011 10:41 PM

All three are extremely derivative and offer nothing new. Why not look for bands that are moving forward rather than worshiping 90s-nostolgia acts?

Catherine Wheel 12-27-2011 11:23 PM

I listen to a lot of other more interesting new stuff. Wild Beasts and the Deerhunter guy's side project Atlas Sound for example.

But lately I've gotten kind of hooked on Yuck in particular. And I just listened to Swoon again after not hearing it for a while and have grown kind of fond of it.

Order 66 12-27-2011 11:24 PM

gee these silversun pickups sure do sound alot like the pumpkins

MyOneAndOnly 12-27-2011 11:48 PM

Joy Formidable has the most potential.

oh get over yourself

Netphorian Gadabout 12-28-2011 02:39 AM

Creative? Yuck by a millimeter.
Most success? Silversun Pickups.
Best Musicianship? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Catherine Wheel 12-28-2011 03:08 AM

Joy Formidable are the least accessible of the three. They are by far the noisiest and most dissonant sounding. There is a real punk rock quality to their music.

Yuck are the most accessible / catchiest. Also the most straightforward.

Silversun Pickups are somewhere in the middle. There is an edge to them but also a prettiness and softness that Joy Formidable tend to lack. They are also probably the most derivative.

sonic what are some current bands you enjoy and i mean not NMH or Flaming Lips they do not count

Eulogy 12-28-2011 09:54 AM

i like how he throws in "worshiping" just to sound that much more demeaning

I mean seriously, I enjoyed all three upon first listen, but then I realized my enjoyment was actually 90s nostalgia. So when I put those emotions aside, I realized how unimportant all three were.

Who listens to music putting emotions aside to realize that the music is not "important" enough? That`s like having sex with a sheep with your eyes closed just for the sake of having sex and being able to brag about it.

well that didn't answer the question at all

The Omega Concern 12-28-2011 06:28 PM

The Joy Formidable already have a nice body of work for themselves. I like the style of the songs the guy sings in as it creates some actual depth to their overall sound. Their tones are an original wash because the girl uses the ole Line6 2x12 and she's found success with it where most muso's wouldn't even try. Kudos to her.

Because the question is irrelevant.

Dogfighter28 12-28-2011 09:09 PM

soniclovenoize hates fun

TuralyonW3 12-28-2011 09:33 PM

Yuck has that one good song and the rest of the album is zzzzzzz

Silversun have coll guitars at times but a lot of mediocre songs, and they're kinda overwrought

Joy formidable has some fantastic songs, and they don't have any really lame songs. They win

TuralyonW3 12-28-2011 09:35 PM

To answer the original poster I don't think any of the three bands are particularly creative, good musicians, or will have much success beyond the following they have now

Trotskilicious 12-29-2011 02:00 AM

well the silversuns already peaked

yuck probably has too

joy formidable is on the twilight soundtrack

redbull 12-29-2011 02:03 AM

joy formidable
silversun
joy formidable

Trotskilicious 12-29-2011 02:11 AM

i like yuck, thought it was a good album

redbull 12-29-2011 08:41 AM

me too, and they're good live
but joy formidable are a better band

lol ok

so is the fact that the joy formidable is "unimportant," but that didn't stop you from asserting it. you're so obnoxious.

That's the mentality AC/DC and 70's rock fans had of the grunge bands at the outset. The AIC's, PJ, Soundgarden and the Pumpkins were a throwback to 70's AOR (album oriented rock).

besides all that -- If you can't tell that the Silversun Pickups are a derivative and The Joy Formidable are innovative, then I can't value your musical opinion that highly. Not a big deal of course, just sayin.

slunken 12-29-2011 09:11 PM

when you dance i can really love kind of sounds like cinammon girl

Holy shit did you just call me scottytheoneand?

Wow, that's fucked up. :(

The Omega Concern 01-01-2012 02:39 AM

shit, im sorry. And that changes everything sonic, cause I know your a muso. So, if you got a moment, take in these two deep cuts from TJF. I like that they cover these alt-rock extremes and probably do it as well as anyone has since the Pumpkins.

somebody give that band a million pounds and 6 months of studio time, cause I want another album from them!

Yeah, that first song is pretty cool, that second one seemed alright but not my cup of tea.

I guess the joke is, to me, that with the Yuck album and either Silversun Pickups albums, I really liked them upon my first listen, but upon repeat listens I was left cold, and it dawned on me that they just simply sound like a handful of my favorite 90s bands thrown together into one band (each respectively). And then it clicked that maybe that was the real reason I dug them, my nostalgia for the bands of my teen years, but represented in a non-commercial sort of way...

And then I laughed when I saw Yuck and Silversun Pickups together, in this thread about which are the most creative, especially because it was a Catherine Wheel. And I know this board has a collective hard-on for The Joy Formidable and I sort of lumped them in...

But I appreciate you not being an obnoxious douche and actually attempting a dialog with me to clarify what I meant, rather than getting all sensitive that I could have possibly said something negative about their three favorite bands. I will check out tJF even though I'll probably end up feeling the same about it...

gerryHept 01-02-2012 01:23 AM

Good thread

Lol, great thread!

The Omega Concern 01-02-2012 01:41 AM

notice I said covering the extremes as well as anyone has since the Pumpkins. They can't get there ALL the way because though they have a decent testosterone element, having the girl on vox will limit them from going full on Silverfuck or Ode to no one. Her energy is rather inviting however and they do have a "stumbeline" side to their style that's natural for them because of the girl. Very good drummer, distinctive style with great chops and because of him puts the band in the power trio category . But I think their overall strength is their songwriting approach: like this...

smashingjj 01-02-2012 06:31 AM

i'm pretty sure there are a lot of bands with girls on vocals who take it a lot farther then silverfuck or ode to no one.

soniclovenoize 01-02-2012 11:56 AM

OK I'M LISTENING TO THE JOY FORMIDABLE RIGHT NOW I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I THINK

soniclovenoize 01-02-2012 12:05 PM

I'm listening to that bonus EP with the album, and I was really hoping I could talk about how much this sucks, but it's actually really good. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon14.gif
