shit, im sorry. And that changes everything sonic, cause I know your a muso. So, if you got a moment, take in these two deep cuts from TJF. I like that they cover these alt-rock extremes and probably do it as well as anyone has since the Pumpkins.

Yeah, that first song is pretty cool, that second one seemed alright but not my cup of tea.

I guess the joke is, to me, that with the Yuck album and either Silversun Pickups albums, I really liked them upon my first listen, but upon repeat listens I was left cold, and it dawned on me that they just simply sound like a handful of my favorite 90s bands thrown together into one band (each respectively). And then it clicked that maybe that was the real reason I dug them, my nostalgia for the bands of my teen years, but represented in a non-commercial sort of way...

And then I laughed when I saw Yuck and Silversun Pickups together, in this thread about which are the most creative, especially because it was a Catherine Wheel. And I know this board has a collective hard-on for The Joy Formidable and I sort of lumped them in...

But I appreciate you not being an obnoxious douche and actually attempting a dialog with me to clarify what I meant, rather than getting all sensitive that I could have possibly said something negative about their three favorite bands. I will check out tJF even though I'll probably end up feeling the same about it...

Good thread

Lol, great thread!

The Omega Concern 01-02-2012 01:41 AM

notice I said covering the extremes as well as anyone has since the Pumpkins. They can't get there ALL the way because though they have a decent testosterone element, having the girl on vox will limit them from going full on Silverfuck or Ode to no one. Her energy is rather inviting however and they do have a "stumbeline" side to their style that's natural for them because of the girl. Very good drummer, distinctive style with great chops and because of him puts the band in the power trio category . But I think their overall strength is their songwriting approach: like this...

smashingjj 01-02-2012 06:31 AM

i'm pretty sure there are a lot of bands with girls on vocals who take it a lot farther then silverfuck or ode to no one.

soniclovenoize 01-02-2012 11:56 AM

OK I'M LISTENING TO THE JOY FORMIDABLE RIGHT NOW I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I THINK

soniclovenoize 01-02-2012 12:05 PM

I'm listening to that bonus EP with the album, and I was really hoping I could talk about how much this sucks, but it's actually really good. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon14.gif

I listened to The Big Roar today. Pretty good, but it doesn't have 1/10th the element of fun and songwriting that SSPU have, or 1/100th of what SP has. And their guitar work is way too stagnant and reliant on noise. They have no concept of rhythm. Everything is straight 8th or 16th notes. Maybe they will grow on me, cause I do like the girl's voice and the general texture they are going for.

Listening to Yuck next.

redbreegull 01-02-2012 05:17 PM

I really loved Silversun Pickups when I was in high school but over time they have grown cold for me. I still enjoy them once in awhile, but unlike SP's music, which reveals new things to you over many years of listening, you get most of what SSPU is about in the first few listens. I liked the newer album a lot when it came out, but it just doesn't have much staying power. Kissing Families is their best song for sure.

Yuck is fun and I like their record a lot, but like others have said, they don't really introduce anything new or intriguing to the fuzz rock genre. They are also less like SP than the other two bands.

Joy Formidable is pretty good and I like what they are going for. Still, most of their songs don't reach me the way SP songs do. I haven't heard the EP though.

Bottom line is that none of these bands will ever come close to Smashing Pumpkins.

Gossamer 01-02-2012 06:07 PM

SSP is a pretty excellent little modern rock band although I do find myself getting a little tired of the dude's voice by the end of their albums.

Yuck has 2 good songs.

Joy Formidable, I haven't really given a chance yet because all I've been listening to all day everyday lately is CAN.

O.K. thanks captain off-topic. You posted a screamo thrash metal band with a shitty girl singer when the topic is specifically the small cadre of current bands that make up Alternative Rock. The OTEP's of the world do not belong in this discussion.

i was replying to your 'They can't get there ALL the way because though they have a decent testosterone element, having the girl on vox will limit them from going full on Silverfuck or Ode to no one' comment, i posted an example of something much harder done with something as unrocking as a girl on vocals. having a girl on vocals doesn't necessarily limit anything except for your openmindedness.

do you really think billy corgan's vocals were so extreme? i mean what does extreme mean if you must narrow it down to alternative rock

also what exactly is screamo thrash metal

Fully agree on Kissing Families. That song destroys me.

Carnavas is a pretty solid album front to back. Didn't realize how much I loved those last few cuts (Three Seed, yeah - but Common Reactor is rock solid) until just recently.

Swoon has a few great songs on there - Substitution is easily my favorite - but overall, nowhere near as solid as Carnavas.

Caught them live in July of 2010, and I'd still say it was the best show I saw that year - in large part just because it really, really caught me off-guard. I knew I'd like it, but I didn't know I'd like it that much.

Bottom line is bottom, though.

This isn't what happened.

This is why you're obnoxious.

I saw them on the Carnavas tour in '07 and the Swoon tour in '09 and they were excellent both times. Tons of energy.

Because that's where you can comfortably fit the 3 bands mentioned in this thread as well as the Pumpkins. TJF has the most elements the ol' Pumpkins did. They don't really remind me of the Pumpkins when I listen to them because its a different feel and energy altogether, but I make those comparisons because they're the only band I've heard decently recreate the depth and width the Pumpkins established.

It's easy to pick apart any band: with TJF, I think the 8th and 16th notes is a valid critique and they need to be careful on grooving into noise rock in their jams all the time, but that's kinda nitpicking considering its a promising youngish band that could very well have their best work ahead of them. Songs like The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie and Buoy are as brilliant as anything I've heard out of this genre in a long long time.

When I want to get my Alice in Chains 'Jar of Flies' estrogen fix, I listen to this:

Dogfighter28 01-05-2012 12:19 AM

TJF has grown on me a lot on second listen. I wouldnt definitely catch them play and I'd be curious to see what they do next.

Yuck I havent finished yet, is pleasant enough but my least favorite so far. They're like a less annoying Pavement, only 20 years too late.

Catherine Wheel 01-07-2012 04:46 PM

Swoon by Silversun Pickups is labeled as progressive rock on rateyourmusic.com. I laughed so hard when I saw that.

I bought the version of their album that has a b-sides disk and they sound a lot more like the Smashing Pumpkins on that one. Also Rose Gives A Lilly reminds me of the Pumpkins a lot.

somebody should add Wild Flag to this thread. Wild Flag is the shit.
