why do people like UFC?

do you have to be kinda fucked up to like this sport? they may as well just give the fighters a spear or a mace and make sure at least one guy dies. i'm not really a big fan of wrestling, boxing etc., and UFC just seems to be a on a whole other level of violence

MyOneAndOnly 12-18-2011 11:39 AM

Mmmmmm. KFC!

Toast 12-18-2011 02:40 PM

people love watching other people beat the shit out of each other. for thousands of years.

Trotskilicious 12-18-2011 03:45 PM

i also do not get this ludicrous blood thirsty sweet bro sport

MyOneAndOnly 12-18-2011 03:51 PM

..

MyOneAndOnly 12-18-2011 03:54 PM

it's not that different from boxing.

Trotskilicious 12-18-2011 03:59 PM

yes it is, here's why

part of it is pinning your defenseless opponent on the mat and punching their face until they give up

Trotskilicious 12-18-2011 03:59 PM

and because they are macho shit heads that usually takes long enough for them to bleed all over the place

slunken 12-18-2011 04:15 PM

i come in contact with quite a handful of ufc fighters of different degrees where i work (somehow) and what struck me is that they mostly seem like guys who were always really into sports but lacked the grace and talent to achieve a particular skill.

slunken 12-18-2011 04:17 PM

what's the kenny powers quote where he's all like i'm planning a major comeback not trying to be the best at exercising.

it's like that but dumber.

Toby 12-18-2011 04:18 PM

I just like watching them beat the shit out of each other.

Basically. The only time I've watched it was when I was hanging out with dudes while drinking and/or smoking.

Order 66 12-18-2011 07:27 PM

i usually end up having to watch it every saturday night with some dudebros. every now and then i'll get sucked into some good fights but its like watching gay foreplay most of the time

Toby 12-18-2011 07:34 PM

It is pretty gay,huh

"With the strides made in the sport of MMA over the last decade (more states allowing the sport, more main stream media coverage, etc.), it was surprising to a lot of fans that the Australian press corp recently maligned the sport as "barbaric." This begs the question, just how injurious to it's participants is MMA in comparison to its cousin, boxing? The answer should not surprise those fans who understand and appreciate MMA.In 2006, the American American Association of Neurological Surgeons estimated that about 90% of boxers end up sustaining brain damage, pointing out that a direct hit in the ring, to the head, is equivalent to being hit with a 12 pound wooden mallet travelling at around 20 miles per hour.

Yikes! With that comparison in mind, it does not take a doctor to understand why 12 rounds of this type of activity could cause serious damage to a fighters noggin. This has not gone unnoticed by our elected officials as protections have been passed and boxing is highly regulated (for e.g.: The Professional Boxing Safety Act of 1996, The Mohammed Ali Boxing Reform Act).

Now, compare the above to what happens in an MMA event. Rather than focusing on the only two areas of the body to inflict damage in a boxing match (head and body), the MMA fighter is free to focus on legs kicks, take downs, and the various submissions that result from manipulation of the limbs, joints and the neck. Couple this with the limited amount of time in which to fight (as compared to 12 rounds of boxing), and it becomes obvious that, although scarred and bloodied, an MMA fighter is much less likely to sustain permanent, debilitating brain damage as a result of fighting in the sport. "

obviously there aren't enough dead and old mma fighters yet to know about brain damage but i think there are at least decent arguments for saying that boxing is more dangerous long term. also from what i've seen lately in some big matches of mma the guys are basically knocked out in the first round.

killtrocity 12-18-2011 08:31 PM

It's modern gladiators without steel. I am by no means a bro but I respect someone who gets their body into that kind of physical condition and can kick ass. Don't even watch it really but those guys are in better shape than probably any other athlete

exactlythesame 12-18-2011 09:09 PM

why can't fight clubs just be real

oh wait

ghost-mutt 12-18-2011 09:54 PM

yeah i get that the dudes who fight in these matches are pretty damn dedicated and stuff, so good luck to them. but like trots said, i can't get they are allowed to pin their opponent to the ground and basically pummel the guy in the face until the ref thinks the fight is over.

at least gladiators were cool.

Toby 12-18-2011 10:00 PM

American Gladiators were p coll

i bet the gladiators did their fair shair of horrible shit.

Dead Frequency 12-18-2011 10:44 PM

I feel the same way about this sport as I do most, I just can't find myself giving a shit about who wins.

Trotskilicious 12-19-2011 12:52 AM

my argument has nothing to do with their safety since i enjoy american football and that ruins peoples brains, bodies and in general is patently ridiculous and violent, but i do believe in a certain dignity of man that doesn't really lend to squatting on a man's chest and punching his face until he quits, as if that's some kind of contest.

dean mentioned the fights barely last one round, and that's really why they only last one round, since they allow you to kick and punch a man when he is down

dean_r_koontz 12-19-2011 12:58 AM

personally i find it more important how people fare in these different sports rather than how dignified they looks. with that said american footballers doesn't look very cool with their little shorts.

dean_r_koontz 12-19-2011 01:00 AM

obviously the fact that mma fights are shut down immedieately after a person has been rendered defenseless also works as an argument against it being worse than boxing. in boxing, you can get knocked down and be defenseles but if you recover enough before the count down the fight can continue and even more battering to the head ensues.

Trotskilicious 12-19-2011 01:04 AM

i don't really give a fuck for boxing either

Trotskilicious 12-19-2011 01:04 AM

boxing is a dinosaur sport for old fogeys in fedoras

that's a bit of a stretch. boxing officials are pretty pedantic when it comes to the safety of the fighters whereas mma officials are happy to see someone who is pinned to the ground punched/kneed in the face 12 times before they step in.

dean_r_koontz 12-19-2011 02:29 AM

oh you've seen that have you? funny because the rules explicitly states that this is forbidden among other things:

xvii.Kneeing the head of a grounded opponent

barden 12-19-2011 03:53 AM

Holy shit American football BORING.

barden 12-19-2011 03:54 AM
