anyone been to San Juan, PR?

So I'm planning a trip in the next few weeks/months and I'm trying to decide between:

a week in NYC staying with friends, hanging out enjoying the city, etc. (I've been many times before in all seasons and always love nyc)

or

a week in Old San Juan, solo. I've never been before, have heard great things, and have a semi-romantic idea of it ever since reading the Rum Diary years ago. esp around christmas time, it just sounds like a cool place to go. I'd like company but don't know anyone with the time/money to hop on a plane on a whim with me, and i dont mind going by myself. I've only ever traveled by myself, so it wouldnt be anything new.

any suggestions?

San Juan is pretty neat, but a week alone I dunno.

you mean in terms of things to do? that's what im concerned about, too....i mean i'm pretty chill and make friends easy, etc. but i'm not trying to go on a bender or anything. i want to sleep in, sit around at cafes, go to the beach, walk around, eat good food and repeat.

I wish I knew where in Puerto Rico my buddy Jose lives. I bet you could have a blast there if you're the type that enjoys traveling alone.

yeah im almost afraid to travel with other people. it stresses me out.

Well SJ would work for you pretty well. Ive on,y been twice, once for a day and another for two. It is a fairly laid back place with great food. You'd want to get out into the countryside for a bit though, taxis could hook you up there.

is it cheaper at all? or more or less the same as in the states?

i just figure ive been to nyc plenty....and ive wanted to check out PR as a place to possibly re-locate.

i guess ive made up my mind, eh?

the only thing i'm worried about is the weather. I'm looking to go the 7th-14th/ish and it says rain rain rain. would it be better mid january?

It's comparable to the rest of the US, similar to Portland for sure.

November is the rainiest month, I think January is the "coolest."

A week in the city is tough the more I think about it, I think you'd get really bored after three days. Renting a car to get to El Yunque and Fajarda I think would be kinda necessary. Unless you are happy sitting in a cafe for a week straight, that is, but I'd go crazy.

hmmm....good things to think about. thanks for the input.
