spinoff thread: favorite 00's relics

90s/00s relics

i can't believe i gave up on rock music in 1997 when this band was just getting warmed up while fred durst was aping around like a fucking tool making derivative insulting low brow garbage

my favorite drummer in the world is of course the jimz but Janet Wiess is a close #2
Carrie is my favorite punk style guitarist and probably my second or third favorite that got started after 1976. Bills is in there, Michael Gira, J. Mascis, couple others. I tend to truncate my guitarist lists to pre-punk rock, post punk rock, and metal because it's unfair to put punk rock riff machines like carrie brownstein in with shredding gods like Jimmy Page, Jimi, or Kirk Hammett. Different techniques, styles, but nobody has the bouncy, propulsive, noisy crunch monster riffs of carrie

Corin though has hands down my favorite vox of anyone ever.

Kirk Hammett ugh

supermaid 11-17-2011 01:00 AM

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:07 AM

dude seriously are you telling me you can sit there and listen to master of puppets and not go "god damn this motherfucker that plays gee-tar, this mother fucker right hurr, is the shit."

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:09 AM

I own all of Metallica's albums up to ...And Justice For All

There are certainly some good riffs and songs duh but that guy has the most contrived solos and the worst vibrato of all time

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:09 AM

And the Master of Puppets riff is really fucking easy to play by the way

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:11 AM

oh wait you're the guy that hates zeppelin and can play john coltrane sax parts by muscle memory

i forgot who i was talking to for a sec

so what, you didn't write it

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:12 AM

If you like Jimmy Page surely you can recognize all Hammett does is take archetypes that Page popularized and adds wah to them and plays them faster

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:13 AM

jimmy page stole all his shit too or whatever

i mean what is j. mascis then, just jimmy page with fuzz all over it

whatever guy

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:14 AM

can we at least agree that mac shreds like insanity

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:15 AM

j mascis doesnt play in cliches, he is really varied around the neck and has a style all his own without straying too far from rock tradition

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:18 AM

well i did say my favorite guitarists from 1976 on are Billz, Carrie, J., Michael Gira and I had five but i kind of forget the other one at the moment, it'll come to me. it's not kirk

Peter Buck is really good too but i'm not into REM enough to really go apeshit on that one.

mercurial 11-17-2011 01:19 AM

posters are for 16 yr olds

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:20 AM

not if they're framed dickhead

then they're just art

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:20 AM

I like R.E.M. way more than the Smiths but I think Johnny Marr is a better version of Buck

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:21 AM

shit is highly detailed cardstock anyway, it's not some bullshit poster you pick up at the mall

Order 66 11-17-2011 01:21 AM

you know what band was also good? the radioheads

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:21 AM

oh see

that's who it was

no shit

i just started listening to the smiths and i had no idea how complex and interesting all the guitar work is

i honestly almost want to get a mix without mozzer crooning all over it just so i can really pay attention to marr

so cool that he played with modest mouse

Elvis The Fat Years 11-17-2011 01:22 AM

intercourse feels like radiohead.

Trotskilicious 11-17-2011 01:23 AM

we all should know that annie clark is the first great high alternative female guitarist though

Elvis The Fat Years 11-17-2011 01:24 AM

im going to drink to forget that.

mercurial 11-17-2011 01:26 AM

framed posters is what a dad gets for his 9 yr old daughter for when she loses her last milk tooth

Dogfighter28 11-17-2011 01:28 AM

In terms of newer guitarists I would list

Jose Gonzalez (solo, Junip)
David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, David Rawlings Machine)
Paul Waggoner (Between the Buried and Me)
Nels Cline (Wilco, solo)
Tosin Abasi (Animals as Leaders)

Old favorites
Andy Latimer (Camel)
Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
Steve Howe (Yes)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Tom Verlaine (Television)

Yeah prog guitarists are awesome
