Neil Young - any suggestions?
So I never got into Young until last week, when I bought the Weld live album, and it pretty much blew my mind. I've been listening to it non-stop since.
As I understand the man has a really long discography and I'm not into greatest hits things so I would appreciate any suggestion on where to follow, his best works and such. |

I guess I'll start with smashingjj's ones and then I'll go with these ones. I had already listened to Rust Never Sleeps but I suppose it didn't "click" until I listened to Weld. I don't care much for live albums but god this was awesome. |

If you like weld make sure to check out Year of the Horse live 2xCD and of course Live Rust.
Also the crazy horse live at Fillmore archive cd |
Studio wise, give time to everything chronologically from Everybody Knows this is Nowhere through Reactor for starters
Make sure to i n c l u d e time fades away Don't worry about Journey through the past. Long may you run, his collab with stills, isn't as essential, but ok. |
do you count self titled as before or after everybody knows this is nowhere, chronologically
|
Then sleeps with angels and broken arrow.
|
Leave self titled until later
|
start with the first 3 tracks from sleeps with angels
|
Half of freedom is good, most of silver and gold is really beautiful. Harvest moon is half pretty, half boring adult contemporary. 'going home' from are you passionate is amazing, the rest of the album is hit n miss.
|
Once you decide you like him, enjoy greendale, living with war, prairie wind, chrome dreams 2, fork in the road, and Le noise at your leisure, plenty of great moments.
Everything between reactor and freedom is for completists with a few good songs (when your lonely heart breaks) |
1969 sugar mountain and 1971 Massey hall are solid early solo sets as well. Any live stuff from the archives is worth listening to really.
Also 'arc' is awesome experimental music I don't think I missed anything |
OH FUCK Ragged Glory and Mirror Ball are 2 of his best, group these with the sleeping with angels/broken arrow post
|
Ah, unplugged and road rock vol. 1 have some great stuff but not essential.
|
NOW GET LISTENING
|
I only have a few of the albums, though I love NY.
Someone should rapidshare some of this stuff. Just sayin'. |
Thanks everyone, I guess I have some Neil Young homework to do for a long time now
|
honestly sleeps with angels is top 5 stuff. every song is gold just about. really really pretty.
