Hear Young Nigga's track, "Come Threw Looking Clean", over at Odd Future's website. His album is apparently called Expensive Pasta. The "new artist" sounds eerily like Tyler doing his best Lil B impression. Oh, Friday hijinx.

As reported back in April, L.A. rap crew Odd Future have started their own eponymous record label under the operations of RED Distribution/Sony. The label was initially positioned as a means through which the members of the group would release their own music. But today they've announced that they're welcoming a new rapper named Young Nigga to the imprint.

From an official statement:

While our original intent was not to sign anyone to the label we simply could not pass up the opportunity to sign somebody this talented. Young Nigga embodies the DIY ethic and persona of Odd Future along with a commercial appeal that transcends demographics.

my very first tape label was called "boss nigger". no joke. it lasted about 3 months before i realized i really needed to change the name (coinciding with needing to start a blog about it).

Yeah same here. rateyourmusic.com seems to have this guy listed as an alter ego of Tyler the Creator.

i'm considering the amount of merch and albums they crank out with obscenely low production value

slunken 10-02-2011 01:10 AM

i've heard of that i think they callit DIY

Trotskilicious 10-02-2011 02:10 AM

there's a difference between DIY aestetic and low production value and it's about having good taste

there should be but there isn't. why NOT release a song or an album if that only means burning 50 cdrs or whatever? the cons of DIY have always been (and always will be) a flood of releases with "low" production value. quality control isn't as much of an issue when you're doing a run of 25 cassette tapes not 25,000 LPs.

just because they aren't "properly funded" releases doesn't mean they can't or shouldn't exist as documents in time. in more cases than not - these documents fill in the gaps between properly released albums.

why am i having this conversation with you of all people?

MusicMan4 10-02-2011 11:14 AM

tyler released an album in 2009 and an album in 2011
mellowhype put one out in 2010 that a label released in 2011
earl in 2010
i can't keep up with all the members because i generally don't care enough after them but all told theyve really only released one album a piece and a group mixtape and they plan on releasing a group album next year
how is this cranking out albums at some ridiculous pace with "obscenely low production value"
maybe their production values seem low because, you know, until this year they were unsigned teenagers making beats at home

MusicMan4 10-02-2011 11:31 AM

i don't even like them enough to be getting into this

slunken 10-02-2011 02:37 PM

yep
