Quote:

On their website, TV on the Radio have announced that Gerard Smith, the band's bassist and keyboardist, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He's currently undergoing treatment, and he won't join the band on their forthcoming run of dates.

The band writes, "Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard's legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family."

The band is going ahead with its future plans. Interscope will release their new album Nine Types of Light on April 12, and you can use the widget below to download their new song "Caffeinated Consciousness". Also below, you'll find the band's tour dates. They've got a number of shows coming up, including a headlining set at the Pitchfork Music Festival.

saw the National and Arcade Fire tonight and the dude from the National dedicated their last song to Gerard Smith. I'm not familiar enough with their catalog to know if it was their song or if I am totally uninformed if it was a cover.

something about "are you still awake, blah blah something"
