Bars that have $10 minimum for credit card purchases are fucking stupid

Not that it's ever an issue, but it's asinine.

Dogfighter28 05-17-2010 10:42 PM

I went to one with a 15 dollar minimum and had the worst hangover of my life the morning after

TuralyonW3 05-18-2010 12:02 AM

it cost businesses money to run cards. not really asinine just good business.

TuralyonW3 05-18-2010 12:03 AM

15 is a bit much though.

Mablak 05-18-2010 12:19 AM

6 dollars is fair enough, anything above that is asi9. I wonder what the legal limit is, if there is such a thing. I don't think I've ever seen over 15 bucks.

It also costs businesses money to pay employees to count a drawer at the end of the night. In short, it costs businesses money to run a business. How is this my problem?

I just don't like being told what to do. The $ amount is completely arbitrary.

slunken 05-18-2010 12:29 AM

It's like saying "we don't want your business unless your business is over this dollar amount." There's a couple bars I won't go to anymore just because of this rule. It's the principle. If the transaction fee (which is, at the most, what - 50 cents?) is such a blow to the business, why not be cash only? And it's not like the drinks aren't marked up anyway.

This is not my problem and it's infringing upon my rights as a consumer. I thought we were working toward a cashless society?

Guess what bars don't really care about you if you spend less then 10$, they kind of consider you a waste of time.

It's the cost of 3 beers at a cheap bar, if you not going to have more then 3 drinks bring cash with you and don't waste peoples time having to stop and run your stupid card then wait for you cheap ass to sign for it.

sickbadthing 05-18-2010 03:37 AM

You're going to asshole bars, and you going to this bar makes you an asshole.

I bring out the card to pay as I'm ordering my last drink, that way I can drink it in peace. 9 times out of 10, I'm waiting on the bartender.

I've actually found that the bars that need to enforce this rule aren't exactly the classiest joints.

sppunk 05-18-2010 09:55 AM

Businesses can do whatever they want. I'd have a high limit because credit card companies steal so much profit on small purchases. Cut out the middle man scammers.

I guess my main point is why is it only bars? Can't think of any other businesses that feel a need to do this.

sppunk 05-18-2010 11:01 AM

Many diners and small stores here have caps between 10-20. An entire small local burrito chain only accepts cash. Use an atm and get cash.
