Eric Blair 02-27-2010 05:49 AM

Oh I guess you are in Santiago. That was on the outer limit of the quakes radius wasn't it? Do you have any worries for family members?

smashingjj 02-27-2010 11:05 AM

was it in the east or in the west of Chile?

sppunk 02-27-2010 12:48 PM

West of Chile.

Thank God it was so insanely deep underwater, and that Chile has good infrastructure and knows how to handle earthquakes properly. Devastation will thankfully be nothing along the lines of what Haiti has faced. That said, best wishes to all those injured and those who lose family and friends. Bad stuff.

I'm fascinated now to see the tsunami and how it expands NW. With the warning system now in place let's hope it saves lives - a bouy in the open Pacific measured a 1.2m water rise as the tsunami passed. That's very high for open water. Hawaii should be having some fun later today. Same with places like Malibu.

The earth is really rocking right now - this comes a day after a strong quake in Japan and one off the coast of Sumatra. Lots of earthquakes in the past three months.

Hilo Bay may see wave heights of 10-15 feet. The water would move 11 miles inland.

Hawaii's gonna get rocked in 2 or so hours.

JokeyLoki 02-27-2010 05:20 PM

Buoy 150 miles away from Hawaii:

Reports of water receding.

sppunk 02-27-2010 05:26 PM

Receeding water is called backbuilding. Water pulls out then rushes back in.

Santa Monica Calif. has had staggering changes in the past hour.

And New Zealond just was hit with the tsunami - they are at the 12hr mark whereas Hawaii is at the 14-15 hour mark. Still going to be a while until Hilo gets fucked up.

hnibos 02-27-2010 05:27 PM

im kind of excited to see this =/

Fonzie 02-27-2010 05:28 PM

1.5 metre wave hit the chatam islands.

We're not going to get hit, really, though it appears that it's like the tides going in and out every 15 metres.

sppunk 02-27-2010 05:36 PM

Yea a tsunami is like a very fast tide. It is not one big wave - the amount of water is built up under the surface. That creates waves that can stagger many miles.

Sonic Johnny 02-28-2010 03:36 AM
