people who aren't that into music think nirvana is the be-all-end-all. dudes i work with are like pushing thirty or even over thirty and still think nirvana is some of the best music ever.

maybe it's a regional thing

based on people i've known, sublime is more popular and highly regarded than nirvana was and they're also another band i never really liked that much.

yea that's true. I dated this 21 year old last winter and was surprised her and all her friends listened to sublime. They also liked mike doughty and ryan adams.

Seemed weird because they were too young to experience sublime so it's strange they were into it, to me.

I'd never liked Nirvana until a couple years ago. All I really knew were the singles and I think I purposefully avoided them because of their ubiquity and general annoying-ness 100% created by the media and their "legend" and whatever else.

but then I listen to stuff like the Live at Reading thing that just came out and they pretty much slay. just incredibly noisy loud intense obtuse angular punk abrasive shit, incredible musicianship...it's incredible a band that sounded like that broke through so big...associating them with creating "grunge" is such a weird happenstance thing.

yeah i think the reason I'm dismissive of nirvana lately is due to the legend of nirvana and not the actual music, though I wasn't really that into it even in its time. It was almost always SP SP SP SP SP. Also it might have to do with my awakening to the Pixies in the last few years.

come as you are is a great song, so is In Bloom. And they give a shout out to Leonard Cohen on In Utero, which is an album i never listened to that much and subsequently lost.

I always thought Alice in Chains was the worst of the first wave of grunge bands.

i never really got into alice in chains until last year.

i don't think cobain had it in him to write anything more evolved than where he was when he died. they may have done an interesting thing here and there, but i really don't believe they would have "progressed."

i was more referring to the "grunge incarnate" thing. grunge was a made up mainstream media term that never meant anything, how can you even try to progress from there

nirvana became synonymous with "grunge" music, and i would just as quickly call mogwai "post-rock incarnate." mogwai is also a band that is never going to progress from what they are known for.

mainstream media and its terminology have a lot more sway than you're giving it credit for. to dismiss its influence -which is huge- is both wrongly idealistic and stubborn.

seriously grunge has to be the most nonsensical genre ever and especially when applied to nirvana who had pretty much nothing in common with the other big bands associated with it
