people who aren't that into music think nirvana is the be-all-end-all. dudes i work with are like pushing thirty or even over thirty and still think nirvana is some of the best music ever.

Trotskilicious 11-13-2009 08:14 PM

maybe it's a regional thing

based on people i've known, sublime is more popular and highly regarded than nirvana was and they're also another band i never really liked that much.

slunken 11-13-2009 08:26 PM

yea that's true. I dated this 21 year old last winter and was surprised her and all her friends listened to sublime. They also liked mike doughty and ryan adams.

Seemed weird because they were too young to experience sublime so it's strange they were into it, to me.

smashingjj 11-13-2009 08:31 PM

converge

D. 11-13-2009 08:35 PM

oh man people fucking love sublime here.

some sublime cover band plays here a lot.

slunken 11-13-2009 10:44 PM

yea sublime set the stage for a whole new generation of bar bands

I found Isn't Anything amongst random cheap-o CDs at a Cargo Largo for $3 and, even though I had it on my hard drive, I bought the CD because I couldn't bear letting it just sit there unappreciated.:smoke:

Yes and it's about time. They've remained the unrecognized underdog for far too long :erm:

i've always despised them :banging:

Caine Walker 11-14-2009 01:36 PM

someone said it earlier, but nirvana just didn't age well. like a lot of music from *thattime*. duurrrr. they were grunge incarnate, there was no way for them to really progress as a band.

smashingjj 11-14-2009 04:15 PM

although i'll probably never listen to them again for fun, nirvana has some great songs with fantastic hooks and that's more than most of the mainstream bands of that era can say

like fucking pearl jam for instance

samuel redman 11-14-2009 04:31 PM

what songs

I always thought that Cobain would go on playing industrial/nin-kinda stuff in his 30's.

this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard

ravenguy2000 11-14-2009 05:37 PM

I'd never liked Nirvana until a couple years ago. All I really knew were the singles and I think I purposefully avoided them because of their ubiquity and general annoying-ness 100% created by the media and their "legend" and whatever else.

but then I listen to stuff like the Live at Reading thing that just came out and they pretty much slay. just incredibly noisy loud intense obtuse angular punk abrasive shit, incredible musicianship...it's incredible a band that sounded like that broke through so big...associating them with creating "grunge" is such a weird happenstance thing.

anyway ignore me. this is ravenguy discovering for himself things that should be in a "90s rock for dummies" book.

pale_princess 11-14-2009 05:40 PM

bob dylan and, except a few tunes on rain dogs, tom waits.

the sex pistols just seem silly to me, as well.

elliott smith never seemed very special to me.

this.

publius clodius 11-14-2009 05:46 PM

i hate elliott smith's voice with a passion

pale_princess 11-14-2009 05:49 PM

samesies.

ravenguy2000 11-14-2009 05:51 PM

yeah i'm not into elliot smith. seems like i should be

Trotskilicious 11-14-2009 09:37 PM

yeah i think the reason I'm dismissive of nirvana lately is due to the legend of nirvana and not the actual music, though I wasn't really that into it even in its time. It was almost always SP SP SP SP SP. Also it might have to do with my awakening to the Pixies in the last few years.

come as you are is a great song, so is In Bloom. And they give a shout out to Leonard Cohen on In Utero, which is an album i never listened to that much and subsequently lost.

Catherine Wheel 11-14-2009 09:45 PM

Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Dave Matthews Band

Trotskilicious 11-14-2009 10:06 PM

yeah i'm not into AiC or DMB either

Catherine Wheel 11-14-2009 10:51 PM

I always thought Alice in Chains was the worst of the first wave of grunge bands.

pale_princess 11-15-2009 01:09 PM

i never really got into alice in chains until last year.

i don't think cobain had it in him to write anything more evolved than where he was when he died. they may have done an interesting thing here and there, but i really don't believe they would have "progressed."

publius clodius 11-15-2009 08:07 PM

i was more referring to the "grunge incarnate" thing. grunge was a made up mainstream media term that never meant anything, how can you even try to progress from there

also they did progress, just compare bleach and nevermind

i don't even like nirvana much your comment just seemed really stupid

Caine Walker 11-15-2009 08:15 PM

nevermind was just really slick, bleach was not. if you want to call that progression, then knock yourself out.

nirvana became synonymous with "grunge" music, and i would just as quickly call mogwai "post-rock incarnate." mogwai is also a band that is never going to progress from what they are known for.

mainstream media and its terminology have a lot more sway than you're giving it credit for. to dismiss its influence -which is huge- is both wrongly idealistic and stubborn.

Gossamer 11-15-2009 11:57 PM

The Pixies
Pavement
My Bloody Valentine
The Velvet Underground

all ridiculously overrated imo

I like a few songs here and there with each of these bands but their overall output is meh to me

true, but what exactly do grunge bands have in common that it's possible to "progress" from? that they're mostly from washington state? i guess nirvana should have moved or something.

mistle 11-16-2009 04:54 AM

seriously grunge has to be the most nonsensical genre ever and especially when applied to nirvana who had pretty much nothing in common with the other big bands associated with it

I'm Hardcore 11-16-2009 09:10 AM

Nihilist shut the fuck up already. you are NOT the king of music.
