Trotskilicious 07-27-2009 10:12 PM

i myself am horrified at the glorification of a pack of DROPOUTS in the final chapter of the harry potter saga

THEY DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL!?!?! THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!

JokeyLoki 07-27-2009 10:14 PM

I'm rereading the books right now. It's a good series :(

Trotskilicious 07-27-2009 10:29 PM

yeah honestly it surprised the hell out of me

first book is kind of amateurish "gosh i wonder what the stone could be" gee i dunno maybe the SORCERER'S STONE? but after that it really picks up. I think I like chamber of secrets the most.

I think the Deathly Hallows was my favorite, but re-reading them I may change my mind. I really liked the Quidditch World Cup opening of Goblet of Fire. From that one on I read them cover to cover the same day they came out. (Glad I did, I didn't get the "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" crap ruined for me.)

me too.

I knew that no one could ruin it for me if I did that. Hah.

I need to reread Deathly Hallows. I'm still searching down a UK version here. They're super hard to come by here. (I can buy it online, I'm fully aware, but I like the fun of searching them out in used book stores and such)

I know I'll reread it at least once before the Deathly Hallows movie(s) come(s) out.

JokeyLoki 07-27-2009 11:04 PM

Is there a difference between the American and UK versions, besides the cover art?

murgle 07-27-2009 11:11 PM

only little ones, really. Small things you'd expect like "torch" instead of "flashlight", but there are also a few larger ones.

This one stood out to me the minute I read it, and this will fly my nerd flag high, but whatever. When I read Goblet of Fire, I noticed an entire phrase had been added to the US version. When Harry and the others have to leave at the asscrack to get to the Quidditch World Cup, he asks why Percy and Charlie don't have to get up that early and is told that they'll apparate. In the US edition it says something to the effect of, "Harry knew Apparating was very difficult, but had never known a Hogwarts student to do it." The bit about the 'never knowing a Hogwarts student to do it' was not in the UK edition.

And I just noticed this one as I just got the Half Blood Prince UK edition (The 'Adult' edition, actually- it just has less obvious cover art). When Malfoy's got Dumbledore cornered on the astronomy tower, Dumbledore says something to the effect of, "We can hide you more completely than you can imagine". In the US edition, he expands saying, "We can hide you more completely than you can imagine. The Death Eaters would not be surprised that we had captured and killed your family. After all, that is what they would do" or something.

This is all off the top of my head and I'm a gigantic nerd, I know.

JokeyLoki 07-27-2009 11:12 PM

Hmm. Interesting. Wonder why the difference?

murgle 07-27-2009 11:14 PM

No clue. I originally thought that maybe they had done that to explain things, but the bits that are added really allow the reader no extra insight.

Maybe they just felt like expanding certain points to make more interesting?

redbull 07-27-2009 11:18 PM

i think deathly hollows is the best aside from the ending, which has to the be the hugest use of deus ex machina in all of literature ever. goblet of fire is the second best

it really bothered me that harry never actually killed voldemort, he had to die by his spell bouncing back into him

Me too. I started from the first one the other day. I'm in the middle of the third book now.

JokeyLoki 07-27-2009 11:19 PM

I think that's a good thing... in the end, Harry tried to redeem Voldemort, didn't he? I think the point was that Harry is ultimately good, Voldemort ultimately evil, and evil always destroys itself.

I agree

Shallowed 07-27-2009 11:24 PM

Harry and the gang had a pretty big hand in destroying Voldemort.

AndySlash 07-27-2009 11:38 PM

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

YOU BITCH

YOU BITCH

Tchocky 07-28-2009 12:19 AM

I've never read the books. My mother is pretty much my personal HP encyclopedia (she's read every book about 10 times apiece). Every time a new HP movie is released I get a 45 minute lecture about what the film didn't in-fucking-clude from the books and why they should have included those things as opposed to whatever the film-makers added that wasn't in the book.

My mom demanded Deathly Hallows spoilers from me before the book was released two years ago. She likes reading the end of books first.

Tchocky 07-28-2009 12:25 AM

My mom, unfortunately, has moved onto the Twilight series now. :( She claims the books generally suck and the movie generally sucks, yet she's already read every Twilight book about 4 times apiece now, and puts on the movie when she's bored (despite the fact that she bitches about it constantly almost every time she puts it on, natch).

One of the highlights of watching the new HP movie in theaters for her was getting a glimpse of the teaser trailer for New Moon.

:hurl:

AndySlash 07-28-2009 12:29 AM

your mom

Tchocky 07-28-2009 12:33 AM

Yo momma so fat, when her beeper goes off, people think she's backing up.

AndySlash 07-28-2009 12:35 AM

yo momma so fat even Jabba tha Hutt say DAYUUUUUUUM

AndySlash 07-28-2009 12:38 AM

So what's the score here:

These are all her opinions and her opinions alone...she's not trying to convince anyone of anything...this was just her idea of a good time. Feel free to make fun of her or me.

Anyway, her predictions for what will/might/could happen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Harry is an accidental horcrux. Voldemort or Snape may or may not have just figured it out. Voldemort doesn’t want Harry killed yet. –OR-- They may not know till Voldemort tries to kill Harry.
2. Harry’s “home” will be destroyed the second he becomes 17. If he’s there or if it’s possible, he will try to save the family that treated him so poorly.
3. The Dursleys received some sort of payment for taking in Harry. Example: Maybe a spell for prosperity. It’s a wonder they were prosperous because they are so horrible.
4. The Hufflepuff cup is in the trophy room. It’s probably the cup Ron polished 14 times or Voldemort’s award for services to the school that Ron puked on. Voldemort would find it funny that it was there.
5. Snape may be seeking fame for himself. It’s repeated over and over that he has contempt for famous wizards—those he believes are inferior to himself. I think he believes Voldemort is inferior because he keeps getting beat by Harry. I think he may go up against Voldemort to prove it.
6. Snape was trying to invade Voldemort’s mind while teaching Harry Occlumency. He’s looking for “weapons” to defeat Voldemort. Does he know of a horcrux? He may be in possession of the Opal Necklace (Ravenclaw horcrux?)
7. Harry will not have to collect all the horcruxes.
8. Regulus Black stole the Locket horcrux, before or after it was put into the basin. I don’t know. Harry has inherited it. Does Mundungus, Kreacher, or Aberforth have it?
9. Aberforth is the barkeep at the Hog’s Head. I believe he was defamed by Voldemort after Dumbledore turned down Tom’s job application. Did Mundungus have anything to do with Tom having information about goats?
10. Voldemort may not die. Dumbledore said, “there are worse things than death.” Lupin told Harry that one may live without a soul as long as their body is working. Voldemort has taken most, if not all, of his soul out of his body.
11. It is possible Voldemort put his last bit of soul into Harry? He couldn’t die with all those horcruxes out there but he was less than alive. His soul was used to being torn and accidentally went into Harry.
12. There’s a good chance the “Wedding” will be interrupted by Death Eaters. The Weasleys and friends will put up a good fight. The Weasley twins will prove they are geniuses. Some of their inventions are still at the “Burrow.” They will fight unconventionally for wizards.
13. Harry will master nonverbal spells to the surprise of Voldemort and Snape. He’ll use Legilimency and Occlumency just in time.
14. Neville will play a big part in the final battle. Nonverbal spells—I don’t know. With his own wand he should be even better than before. Bella, you’re going down! I hope he doesn’t die. Once Bella is out of the picture, his parents regain their sanity. They reunite.
15. The archway has something to do with the Deathly Hallows.
16. Harry will be able to communicate with Dumbledore through his Chocolate Frog trading cards. He will be able to communicate with other dead people using the 2-way mirror.
17. Harry may choose to give up his life for his friends or an enemy. Harry felt sorry for Malfoy in HBP.
18. Harry may “die”. If the final horcrux is Harry, Voldemort will have succeeded in
destroying his own soul and not Harry. Either must die at the hand of the other. Can this be stretched to mean that Voldemort could kill Harry or himself by zapping Harry?
19. Voldemort can’t really kill Harry because of Lily’s blood. Her blood will protect Harry not kill him.
20. Dumbledore said that Voldemort is “perhaps” the most knowledgeable wizard of the dark arts. Dumbledore knows Snape’s abilities. Snape may be more knowledgeable or maybe Snape just thinks he is.
21. The phoenix will return with the sword. The sword may be used to kill the snake. Is the snake Regulus? Regulus is a Latin name for a basilisk. Well, Harry is a parcelmouth. I guess he’ll find out before anything bad happens. I know Regulus is supposed to be dead.
22. Neville’s wand will have some significance. Voldemort will have to replace his wand because it doesn’t work against Harry. If Ollivander was kidnapped would he know to make Voldemort’s wand a brother to Neville’s. Ollivander may guess that Neville will be in the coming battle with Harry. Neville could be protected. His grandmother will be so proud he faced Voldemort and lived.
23. Professor Trelawney will give useful predictions but no one will believe her.
24. Harry must return to Hogwarts.
25. Snape may have been using occlumency against both Dumbledore and Voldemort.
26. Salazar Slytherin will be the demise of his own family having insisted on blood purity. Voldemort being half blood will be abandoned by the pure bloods when they find out.
27. Dumbledore said that Harry’s strength lies in love not hate. He will not kill Voldemort just as Draco could not kill Dumbledore.
28. I’m beginning to think I’m right about Snape being in love with Lily Evans. Snape and Lily were competitors in “Potions”. This was probably his way of flirting with her. I think he respected her. When he called her a “Mudblood” he had been embarrassed. I believe he was deeply sorry that she died because of him. Dumbledore could tell he was not lying because it was true. Voldemort had no intention of killing Lily. Was there a bargain? Voldemort better look out for a ticked off Snape.
29. Harry locates the last horcruxes using the Mirror of Erised. They are his deepest desire. He will not notice that he is also in the mirror.
30. Harry marries Ginny and moves to the country for the quiet life he always wanted.
31. There will be a cure for werewolves.
32. There will be a prequel not a sequel.
33. Death Predictions: Harry—don’t think so. It’s still a kid’s book.
Voldemort—he’s worse than dead.
Ron—lives
Hermione—lives
Bellatrix—dead
Wormtail—don’t care
Lupin—lives
Tonks—lives.
McGonagal—lives.
Mad Eye—dead.
Hagrid—lives.
Grawp—lives
Madame Maxime—lives.
Fleur Delacour—if she dies she will also take out a lot. You don’t want to get a Veela mad on her wedding day. Talk about Bridezilla!
Bill—If Fleur dies, he dies.
Fred and George—lives. You can’t break up the dream team.
Molly—lives.
Arthur—lives. Percy—dies. He has a change of heart. Has to prove why he was sorted to Gryffindor and not Slitherin.
Neville—lives.
Luna—lives
Snape—dead? Unless Harry saves him.
Lucius—I hope so. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Narcissa—ditto.
Draco—gets Filch’s job. Moaning Myrtle will love having him clean her toilet.
Scrimgeour—dies.
Umbridge—lives or dies, as long as it’s torturous.
Greyback—dead.
Dobby—lives.
Kreacher—has his head put on a plaque. It’s placed near his Mistress at Grimmauld Place so they can chat.
The Dursleys—will be taken care of by Harry, because they are family. They do not live quite as grand as they are used to. Dudley starts getting punished. Could they be moving into 12 Grimmauld Place?
