Anyone hear this Rocket ripoff on Yotube?

I came across this song on Youtube called 'SMASHING PUMPKINS RARE' which sounds a lot like Rocket. A LOT. But the bassist is hot so i dont care. Check this trick out. I took it upon myself to find her Myspace. And I'm glad I did. I draw your attention towards the picture in her album where she poses naked on a bed. Covered up unfortunately. But still well worth a look.

And here's the link to the Rocket ripoff

Whatever.

MonteLDS 07-20-2008 11:28 PM

that bass reminded me of Hummer mixed w/ Rocket..

complete rip off.

SMB Project (MAKES THEIR OWN UNIQUE NOISE)

pff.. go back to Super Mario World

j.willard 07-20-2008 11:45 PM

HAHA yes I know about them well. HAHA. yes. I knew eventually if I didn't tell you guys about them they would find their way here. All of their songs are so wannabe pumpkins it's sad. As a member of a different band in Orlando, I just find it hilarious that they strive to be independent and original and fail so hard. Total lawlfest.

Ramdust 07-20-2008 11:59 PM

Intro sounds a LOT like Blue.

MonteLDS 07-21-2008 12:10 AM

even the music video seems to rip off the music video Rhinoceros. when they hold the camera and film themselves

??? 07-21-2008 12:30 AM

wow, they sound a LOT like early sp. moreso than silversun pickups. that said, however, the song is pretty cool and i'd be interested to hear more of their stuff. what are they called, Rumors?

j.willard 07-21-2008 12:46 AM

No, SMB Project. They are total lamesauce.

jimmychauv 07-21-2008 12:49 AM

While we're on the topic of ripoffs...

Shallowed 07-21-2008 12:57 AM

Psh, yeah, I've seen them before, everything about them seems to be a blatant imitation.

Bullshit.

Sarcastic Smile 07-21-2008 02:59 AM

They post on the pumpkins myspace all the time.. leaving spam comments that say "if you like SP check this band out ____link"

jesus christ isle, these guys are ripping your favorite band right off. SP could probably sue them and win. are you that much of a homer that you can't see the forest for the trees here? At least the SSP don't have songs you can overlay on SP songs and not hear a difference.

??? 07-21-2008 05:10 AM

^sure i can see the damn difference, but its not like this band are going anywhere, is it? they're making the kind of music they enjoy and its not really all that bad, so who cares? and the riff is a pretty weak ripoff anyway. they've employed the same very standard chord progression, drumbeat and whispery vocal dynamic. that's not the same as copying all the parts from the song and calling it your own. to be honest, this song sorta reminds me more of frail and bedazzled- anyone else getting that? there seems to be this crazy sort of compensation culture these days where the most trivial bullshit is suddenly grounds for "suing" someone. you couldn't call this song a rip-off. if i'd written rocket i wouldn't dream of suing these guys, i'd probably just sit back and think "aw, that's cute" and be a bit flattered.

and i find it curious enough that there is even one band out there who have successfully imitated the pumpkins' sound- or part of it- this closely; its something i thought i would never hear. radiohead wannabes are a dime a dozen, but sp have always really stood apart for some reason, and i find that pretty baffling seeing as their songs are just so damn simple to play, really. with a good knowledge of chords and a certain lyrical affectation, honestly anyone could write a pumpkins song. it just seems to me like nobody's tried.

ChristHimself! 07-21-2008 05:29 AM

dude it's not just a chord progression, that riff is a blatant dumbed down, strummy version of the rocket riff.

Waiting 07-21-2008 08:01 AM

They were supposed to play with SP in the Bang Music Festival last year. I remember them on the list of horrible bands.

still there
Rumors

Eulogy 07-22-2008 05:06 PM

holy shit. that's Rocket alright. wow.

Eulogy 07-22-2008 05:08 PM

that's slightly infuriating.

edit: is it possible for something to be slightly infuriating? whatever. it sucks.

cardiac 07-22-2008 05:40 PM

what a blatant rip-off. takes balls. did they just assume not that many people had heard Rocket so they thought they could get away with it?

This is as much attention that I'm willing to give this band. Awful beyond belief.

keito 07-22-2008 05:44 PM

it's pretty much pathetic... i guess they didn't quite get what Billy said about rippin off (from the Beattles, Cheap Trick... you know).

The riff is from Rocket so maybe we should put this song in our netphorian Rocket inspired compilation? :) we would be close to 33.

It reminds Moleasskiss somehow too.

placebo_halo 07-22-2008 08:47 PM

wow

Shallowed 07-23-2008 12:59 AM

This song sucks ass through a straw.

seign 07-23-2008 02:09 PM

That's probably the most blatant rip-off of the SP I've ever heard. Same chords, almost the same progression, and the guitar tone is almost identical. Even the structure of the song is similar. Anyone play the song simultaneously with Rocket to compare the tempo? If the tempo is the same, someone should make an mp3 of both songs playing at the same time for comparison. Or adjust the tempo on one of the two slightly and do the same thing.

edit: Also note the little Quiet rip-off toward the middle.

seign 07-23-2008 02:10 PM

" This video has been removed by the user. "

haha... looks like they read netphoria also.

Tribute2JohnnyB 07-23-2008 02:51 PM

wow.

that was horrendous.
