R-rated terminated
Kinder, gentler T4 means studio can sell more toys to the kids

Buzz Lightyear and Wall-E may want to make room for the Terminator. The producers behind next summer's Terminator: Salvation say they're aiming for a kid-friendly PG-13 in the U.S. -- meaning kinder, gentler killer cyborgs from the future. The reason? Less blood-letting means oodles of T4 toys. The previous trio of Terminators were rated R for gory action.

This won't be the first time a 1980s film franchise has been softened for today's audiences -- last year's Live Free or Die Hard was similarly defanged, explaining why John McClane never completely utters his oft-quoted catchphrase "Yipee ki-yay, motherf---er" in the sequel.

The original Die Hard was produced in 1988 by Joel Silver, who just released the family-friendly Speed Racer.

Silver says a more accessible rating down south (which translates to more kid-friendly fare here, regardless of our Canadian system) is simply smart business. "When you make expensive movies, which I do, you want them to be successful."

Besides which, Silver adds of Racer, "I've always wanted to have all this stuff -- to be able to walk into a Toys R Us and see these incredible displays of products ... I like having all of that."

As if they wouldn't make enough money with a fucking R rating. :noway:

i had toys from terminator 2 when i was a kid. this is stupid.

TheMilstead 05-18-2008 05:42 PM

This is retarded. I remember back when T2 came out. I had the car that shot missiles, as well as about 4 or 5 different kinds of Arnold/T-800/Endoskeleton figurines. They don't need to lower the rating to make it kid-friendly. The movie's going to bomb without Arnold anyway.

Y'know, aside from a few f-bombs, the Terminator series was never really hard R to begin with. Saw? Hostel? That's some hard rated R stuff. Sure, there is the odd gore shot (arm/face comming off, TX ripping through guy's chest) but the series is never really about the gore. The Terminator shoots up a cop shop in the 1st movie, and its a fairly bloodless affair. But the scene is intense, and Terminator over is more about speed and intensity of action sequences and the unstoppable crushing force of the Terminator comming after the characters. Not seeing heads getting ripped off and fountains of blood. If James Bond can pull off a pretty decent and intense action movie within a PG-13, it may be possible for Terminator.

Possible. Not likely with a director named McG, but possible.

i think aliens vs predator was also a bad example of this sort of shananigans

Christian Bale's in it. I thought Batman Begins was good action at PG-13... he can carry a "serious" movie like this without being "pussified." I can only think of one scene in T2 (the best one) that made that movie R anyway. And it was far from necessary.
