It's Official: ROBERT TRUJILLO Joins METALLICA! - Feb. 24, 2003

As first predicted here last week, METALLICA have officially announced the addition of bassist Robert Trujillo to the group's ranks.

Trujillo, a former member of SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and OZZY OSBOURNE, fills the slot left vacant by the departure of Jason Newsted.

"We've all known, and have been huge fans of Rob since the early '90s when he was a part of the legendary hardcore/metal band SUICIDAL TENDENCIES," the band said in a statement posted at www.metallica.com. "We got to know Rob when we played together with SUICIDAL in Europe 1993, during the 'Nowhere Else To Roam' tour. We were impressed by Rob's roaring bass style and his very cool, unique vibe onstage, things we got to see again during the '94' 'Summer Shit' tour when SUICIDAL joined forces with us.

"My visions of Rob are when we did Summer Shit 94 Tour with SUICIDAL, and DANZIG," METALLICA frontman James Hetfield said. "I remember being blown away by the fierce-ness and seeing Rob, as this monster on bass. He brings an awesome new strength to the band, and makes us step up."

"I must say Ozzy, Sharon, Zakk, Mike Bordin, all the team and family members mean the world to me. Love and respect, my family 100 percent. I am very stoked, excited and look forward to my new journey with my METALLICA brothers. STEP UP!" revealed a pumped up Rob Trujillo.

"We've taken a long time to find the right bass player for us," continued the band's statement. "Obviously being a good bass player is important (!!) but it was also very important that whoever we found would fit in as a family member, a brother with a huge vibe. We wanted a fourth band member, not just a new bass player.

"I am very excited for Rob to be in the band and it feels like we are a new band, yet again," said guitarist Kirk Hammett.

"When Rob came to San Francisco the first time and jammed with us, we all felt this incredible magic between the four of us. It was just something that we could not describe, we all just knew it. Bob Rock told us right after the jam, that it sounded like a fucking 747 taking off!!"

"I am soo fucking excited to be a full unit again," said drummer Lars Ulrich. "The last two years of just being the 3 of us have taught me soo much about myself, about James and Kirk and about METALLICA. And to welcome Rob into METALLICA in 2003 after all the growth and soul searching we've been through for the last two years, feels so fucking awesome. Being at full strength again is at this moment indescribable.

"We're fuckin' bristling with new energy, new respect, new vibes and a huge fucking appetite for everything METALLICA is. Having Rob here, and him choosing to become a part of our family, will enable us to get to yet another level. So welcome Rob!"

Sure Load and ReLoad weren't great albums, but I honestly believe St. Anger will be one of their best albums to date. They've had lots of time to look at their mistakes and correct them. Also, with so much hype on their website, you know it will be big. Tallica made a good choice with Trujillo. He is a wicked bassist and now I have no doubt, that Metallica will soon be back at full force.

Oh yea, I've every right to bash Metallica$h, I am among the legions of people who knew that the "Black" album was not their 1st album... what you say??? oh yea it's true, I've come across many who thought Black was their 1st album...anyway, I tried to "ride" along with the change, but could handle no more once Reload & Symphonica were released... I gave the benefit of the doubt that Reload was them kicking the heaviness and speed back in, but I was dismayed and will not be again. St. Anger would have to top Load/Reload.... and yes, I agree Trujillo should be allowed to re-record the bass lines over bob crotch's crap....

posted by: obolong

Rob is a very distinctive funky bass player. I loved it when he joined Suicidal back in the day, but I can't see his style fitting Metallica.

Nowadays Metallica plays a pendantic pedestrian style of straight-ahead, plodding (boring) type of hard rock. It's not even metal music! How can Rob really spread his wings and play true to his heart in that framework?

By the way, I lost a lot of respect for Rob Trujillo when he participated in the Ozzy "classic album rerelease". Rob was the bass player who played over Bob Daisley's original tracks on the "Diary of a Madman" and "Blizzard of Ozz" albums. Sharon wanted those contributions erased so that Daisley wouldn't be owed any royalties. Rob Trujillo is the guilty party who helped Sharon do this injustice to Ozzy's greatest works. He should be ashamed to treat a fellow musician's legacy with such callow regard just to make a buck.

So if Rob has to play crappy Metallica music now, then that's just karma coming back around for him. But the cash is good, right Rob?

He seems like a good guy and he deserves it.

Metallica will keep the bass non-existant for the albums he's on and he'll wind up leaving after he's saved up enough money to buy a gold toilet-bowl. Because seriously, Trujillo is a real musician and what real musician wants to be in a band that won't play music, takes five years between albums, and won't let him have any creative input at all.

Just be sure, this is NOT the rebirth of Metallica. They're still losers who make crappy music. St. Anger, what kind of title is that?!?

I'm sorry to break it to you but everything Metallica has ever done has been done better by other bands.

The only person to ever have a speck of talent in the Metallica crew is dead. Lars is a shitty drummer, Kirk doesn't even play solos anymore and when he did they were pretty uninspired, and James' lyrics are ridiculous.

When recording Dyer's Eve, Lars would only play double bass for ten seconds at a time and have to take breaks in between. Ask Gene Hoglan if he has to take breaks, ask Dave Lombardo if he needs to rest after playing drums for ten seconds.

Why, Dane, just because Metallica is popular and makes a lot of money, that means that they must be the best at what they do?

You know, I used to be a Metallica fan too. And then I grew up.

All metalheads love their first 4 albums.
They are the third band that influenced metal music this much after Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin , although they suck with load and reload.
So you guys get a life and quit bitching.

Trujillo is an awesome bassist, but his style does not fit at all with the metallica style. Scott Reeder or Joey Vera would have been a much smoother fit musically. Besides, the bass tracks for St. Anger have already been recorded by Bob Cock, so Rob will spend his time learning and playing tracks from three other bassists. And we have every right to bash/spout our opinions on this, shit I haven't listened to this band for a longer period of time than most of you have. Cliff rolls over once again in his grave. Those two insecure control freaks will stifle Robt's playing, big time. ( I too agree that it was pretty shitty of him to re-record the two Blizzard records like that. Sharon's vindictive dumb ass was mad that Bob and Lee called her an idiotic cunt, so SHE SHOWED THEM WHO WAS BOSS AROUND HERE MISTER !!....)

Since I started listening long ago during the Kill 'em All/Show No Mercy/Bonded by Blood era, I've grown up too...however, I'm still a metalhead and have that stupid need to bang my grape and nothing past AJFA does it for me...not even the Black album.....

anyway...maybe Rob will light the fire that they clearly lost long ago...I'm always hopful that somewhere/somehow the same guys that gave us Creep/Ride/Fight Fire/Horsemen/Remorse will quite fuckin' around and write something would make a metalhead proud...

The Metallica saga gets curiouser & curiouser... but I guess I should expect it by now. Their decade of weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird career moves is nearly complete! (2006 by my calculations...) I guess Rob's an OK choice, but never woulda guessed it myself...

Even weirder is how strange their fanbase has become. Gotta love all you newbie fanboys here... thinking you're vindicated... Now, you just gotta wait til June to buy it for $21 on the day of release (at the mall, of course!) ... but you won't brag about quietly selling it (because you're bitterly disappointed about the CD, but won't admit it here) to a local used record store for $3 (where I'll pick it up for $5, just like Reload...)

Here is my thought on "Metal"lica as of late...They could have put any robot in the Bass position in the curent Metallica. Not only will R.T.'s bass never be heard on album or live, he will get no input to the writing of the material. S.T. is a great band and had great presence in the scene, but I feel that since the regrettable loss of Cliff, the 4th slot in ahem...(it kills me to say this) METALlica, has always been vacant. Regarding the high amount of negative posts about Metallica, they are from true metal fans who feel as passionately as I do about how kick ass they were! They were in the throne of Metal and they tossed away their kingship for the almighty dollar. Can anyone deny how briiliant the songwriting was from Kill em All to AJFA, and to go to the pure dull boredom that is the Black album and beyond? As one BLabbermouth poster once stated, "They have sucked longer than they have been good" 1983-89 = good / 1990- 2003 = suck. (Btw..why does that photo look like the latest photo shoot from Weezer? Look at James! What happened to you guys??!!!)

The Metallica lovers on this board are accusing the rest of us as being "Metallica-haters".

Man, I used to enjoy listening to Metallica back in the early days. I first heard them on the Metal Massacre album, with a high-pitched version of "Hit the Lights". So I used to be a Metallica fan.

But I don't hate them now. They just ceased to exist for me.

They're not part of my thoughts at any time. I haven't bought anything from them since the Black album. I kept that for a few months, and then sadly sold my whole collection. I regretted it for a while, until I heard a song from Load. Never gave them another thought since.

I'm on this board posting because I'm a Trujillo fan. And I still think he needs to answer for playing over Bob Daisley's bass-tracks. C'mon Rob! That was a crappy thing to do to a fellow musician! You need to apologize and set things right again!

As far as Metallica, why should I care about them? They're just as interesting to me as Bruce Springsteen. Fine if you like mid-tempo rock music, but not worth wasting any money or time on while there's decent bands like Exodus, Vio-Lence, Kreator, Destruction, etc that can really bang your head.

So, am I anti-Metallica? No. I'm here to point out what Trujillo needs to do to regain some credibility regarding his professionalism as a musician.

Gimme a break you stupid shits.

I love Ozzy...much respect...but to say that him joining metallica will stifle his creativity or his career is ludricrous. He's been playing on albums written by other people since the mid 90s.......i think he may actually have more creative input in metallica than he has anywhere else in recent years. Metallica has, apparently, really loosened up on this record.....and I think it's a good time for them to bring in a new driving force....

ever have a best/good friend you had for years all of the sudden turn on you or start hanging out with a "clique" that they once knocked???? well, as far as this "metalli-hater goes, that is what Metallica did to me. I think I still may have the interviews on tape somewhere of Lars, during the Monsters of Rock tour, saying how "Metallica doesn't cater to anyone" and in another interview, Kurt with Jason and Kurt saying "could you imagine us playing a love song with the type of music we play?" I am sure any old school fan who was deep into this band recalls those segments. they were bad ass, they were at the top of the world. then something happened along the way, someone decided to bring in bob crotch and that was the onset of the fall of the kings. as far as their music goes, now be honest with yourselves, no way can "black, load, reload" add up in musical weight to a single album of the 1st 4 discs. those 1st 4 discs will forever be etched as the key discs in the history of metal. They, being Lars, needs to come out and call it like it is. They weren't afraid back in the day to say what was on their mind, but now it seems they avoid any ?'s about the change in musical style. Lars and co. claimed that nothing has really changed, only evolution. In my eyes, simplicity is not evolution. The riffs of "Lightning" "Puppets" and "Justice" were technical. James' lyrics were intriguing and thick as mud, at least it made me think as to what he was trying to say. The music on Load and Reload is like someone said, down tempo mediocre rock music. Music, in my opinion, the Metallica of yesteryear would have criticized. It's not so much as I hate Metallica, I felt let down by a band that once said it "wouldn't cater to anyone". So I presume Load/Reload and this tour with Limp Bizquick and Strokin' Park isn't "catering" to anyone???? Seems like a cater to all the trend followers to me.....Damn where is Pantera when metal needs a kick in the ass??

I don't wanna sound like a jerk but what the band said and did yesterdays should not even matter..

So what if Lars said metallica will never do a music video and they end up doing..
People say things but regret saying them..
Also metallica were in 20s and now they are in the 40s..
How can millionaires write songs like Damage Inc,.songs like Damage Inc requires pissed off at the world attitude..but if metallica starts writing songs like this now, I will consider them phonies and putting up a phony image of who they are not...Millionaire rockers with private jets have no identifcation with songs liek damage Inc or battery..

Secondly u see a shift in metallica's lyrics from KEA to the black album. From pissed off at the world to more settled down personal lyrics..

One example is looking at the song Hit the lights to Whereever I may Roam.

"We gotthe metal madness, we are gonna kick ur ass tonight" : this was hit the lights..clearly shows the young energy driven metallica.

"..And the road becomes my bride" : in between the end of justice tour and writing songs for black album, lars, kirks and jason marriages ended up in divorce. the begining of the wherever I may roam captures the personal feeling then..

There was a huge shift in metallica over the years in personality and lyrics and emotions...

metallica should be who they are: from angry kids touring in small vans to filthy stinking rich band touring in private jets.

However that does not excuse metallica for puting up the worst tour of the century...metallica is comming to Toronto but i aint wasting my money..
If i like their new album, i will wait when metallica returns to Toronto alone or with a band that i think will get my money worth..

Rob Trujillo is an excellent bassist, and I hope he is able to re-record the bass tracks on the new record. Hopefully this will give them a new found energy that's been missing from the band since the early 90's. Now if they would just fire that jackass Lars, and get someone who can play more than one drumbeat. But, regardless of Mr. Ulrich's always annoying presence, I have to say that this is the first time in years that I'm actually looking forward to hearing some new Metallica, although I'm not buying it until I hear it.

Something else that I've noticed throughout this thread, will people PLEASE stop calling them 'Tallica! It's fucking asinine!

Trujillo rules. I loved him when he was with Black Label Society last year. Too bad he had to leave BLS and Ozzy for this. But he truly deserves the success this gig will bring him. Great bassist. Also someone mentioned a funk vibe in that long-ass metallica message board post. He's not the one with the funk vibe from Ozzy's band, that's Mike Bordin from Faith No More. Mike is a great drummer, but has the complete wrong feel for Ozzy's band. Oh well.

Oh yeah, by the way, it is SERIOUSLY heavily rumored (possibly true at this point) that Jason Newstead is auditioning/joining Ozzy's band, and pulling double duty with Ozzy and Voivod (just added) on Ozzfest 2003.
