Yep. Both consoles have limited backwards compatability. The 360s backwards compatible titles are limited to those which the team can build emulators for. The Ps3 has addressed the issue 3 different ways in 3 different versions of the console. 1st console had hardware emulation which was the best but has been discontinued. 2nd version uses software emulation which is about as good as the 360s, glitchy but suitable for most games. 3rd version has no backwards compatability offerings.

Yes, you can also stream on the PS3 although it does not have Divx/Xvid support yet that I know of like the 360.

HD prices on the 360 are at about $6 for renting an HD movie. How much is it at blockbuster? Not to mention the fact that it takes bluray out of the equation. I hardly watch movies twice so buying isn't really an imporant thing to me. Netflix is ok but we plan poorly with our que and sending in movies. The 360 marketplace is really quick, convenient and gives me HD movies on demand. I believe they aren't much more pricy than Direct TV or Comcast movies on demand....which also carry heavy monthly fees. I just don't think its that bad when compared to the alternatives. Personally I think we will end up picking up a PS3 after the next price drop, whenever that is. There are a few exclusives I wouldn't mind playing and blu-ray will eventually makes its way into the mix. The only thing that could keep me from picking up a PS3 is if Microsoft releases an external bluray drive for a good price. I do not see the good price part happening any time soon.

ps3 does divx/xvid.

movie rental places here are starting to pick up a decent selection of blu-ray titles now that hd-dvd is dead. downloadable rentals would be awesome but i don't think anybody (psn, xbox live, apple etc.) offers them here

I meant the actual hard drive, not the rentals. The 360 marketplace rates are more or less ok. But its still like $150 for 120gb.

can you not upgrade the disk yourself (i.e. with an off-the-shelf laptop hdd)?

Not officially, no. I wouldnt be surprised if someone cracked open the case and shoved one in. You can connect one through the USB port though I think. Not sure what limits it has.

I believe XBL has now started to offer downloadable movies in Europe. I think they opened the video marketplace just recently, although it may be in the very near future instead. I'm not exactly sure.

As far as the hard drive goes for the 360, $150 for the 120 gig sucks but since I only use the marketplace for rentals and not purchases the 20 gig HD works fine for me. I only wish I had the 120 at times because of the Xbox originals they are offering now. NInja Gaiden Black cost $25 used but its only $15 from their marketplace. Heh, too bad its like 4 gigs.
