dying of aids on a sunny april afternoon

murraymina78 01-26-2008 11:37 PM

Soma: like everyone else, esp. from 5:02 "so let the sadness come again, on that you can depend on me ..."

Mayonaise: from 4:23 and how it builds till "I just want to be meee"

1979: at 2:31 "to the lights and towns below, faster than the speed of sound, faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope"

SIYL: "And for the first time...I'll wrap my wire around your heart and you're mine, You're mine forever" A lot of people hate it but it's one of my favorites.

I enjoyed doing this little exercise. I feel like going through every song doing it.

The end bit of I Want to Be Cold, when all the noise gives out and its just phil strumming the acoustic. so fucking glorious

One of the first such moments I first noticed in 94 or so, when I was driving somewhere and this part came on; gave me goosebumps. And it still does that to me.

The second one is from here is no why, the solo and the moments just before it kicks in. The tension built by those layered squealing guitars, then boomboomBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMBOOMRELEASE. It's kinda sexual. And sex is good.

www.shannon-palmer.com/bliss1.mp3

what are some of YOUR favorite little moments in SP songs?

I'm right there with you Skipgo, those are two of my absolute favorites. Also:

Soma solo- like everyone else- it's like he's reaching for the heavens, or cursing them, or something

By Starlight- Live, "Cause my life has been empty, my LIFE has been untrue" Distorted guitar kicks in.... and literally everything after that, "Dead eyes, are you just like me?" + outro guitar solo

Porcelina- "To the fringes gladly, I walk unadorned, with gods and their creations, with filth and disease... Porcelina"

In general, Pumpkins do great lead guitar at the ends of songs- Vanity, Disarm live, Muzzle, etc

F&G- For whatever reason, the ending piano solo... probably because its the end of MCIS and makes me nostalgic/feels like the end of a journey coming full circle

Rocket- "I miss me... I miss everything I'll never be"

Bury Me- Buildup and outro solo

For Martha- Solo and everything after!!! Makes me wanna cry

I could probably go on. Great thread, even if it has been done before.

and then i knew we'd been forsaken

I need a cigarette now.

Anything in Plume, really.

And same goes for all of Quiet.

JRiordan 01-27-2008 04:40 AM

La Dolly Vita -- the ending build-up and explosion

Glynis -- pretty much the whole song

Starla -- entire jam

Untitled -- solo / ending

Rocket - solo / whole song

Fritter 01-27-2008 04:58 AM

Fuck it, everything the pumpkins did in the 90s was awesome. This is just depressing :(.

Mariner 01-27-2008 05:08 AM

thru the eyes of ruby, the way billy sings and the way the music plays underneath him when he sings "why"

"my love for you just can't explain, why"

fucking perfect.

the way billy sings the last syllable of "paradise" at the end of the "and i know we are forsaken" line, geek u.s.a.

Mariner 01-27-2008 05:11 AM

the middle of 'age of innocence', starting with the distortion on billy's voice on 'before the rites of spring, come to mean all things..., the way billy's vocals give way to that little guitar 'bloop' at the end of the phrase, the way the little bloop echoes into the distance as the thin pre-outro distortion kicks in, the way jimmy's drums take that little extra punky gallop during the first measure after the full band kicks in again

Mariner 01-27-2008 05:16 AM

when the distant rickety drum machine starts in on to sheila, then the delayed/echoed banjo/mandolin drifting in, playing the perfect notes, and drifting out again

james' solo before the last verse of the live 'to sheila' from the 'glass towers sp internet radio broadcast' is absolutely beautiful

Ah fuck yeah.

Mariner 01-27-2008 05:24 AM

during the porcelina outro when that plucked/fuzzed/sustained/synthy lead guitar deviates from the standard porcelina melody and instead plays that little enlightened/mystical/middle eastern note progression

AndySlash 01-27-2008 05:46 AM

That one guitar bend in Landslide. You know what I'm talking about.

SlingeroGuitaro 01-27-2008 05:55 AM

breearrrrr ba da duh dun, duh duhn dduuuuhn duh duuhh duh dhunn

i do. i'm gonna have to dig out PI after all this landslide/hkk/starla/la dolly vita talk.

'dreaming' - the warm shining atmosphere that dawns when they sing "imagine" together

the melodic interplay between the lead guitar/vocals/bass line during the first quiet interlude of siva (sprinkle all your kisses on my head)

angels/barbed wire/fuck you/desire

when the rhythm guitars bottom out and go thundering into "the tragedies reside in you" during the last verse of 'bodies'

absolutely everything that's going on during 'for a love lost/a faded picture/to tread lightning/to ink the lavender skies'

the second to last "lie" during the middle of silverfuck, when the static-y guitars sing along with billy's falsetto

when all four band members sing together during farewell & goodnite, and then yeah that outro ...

tyguy666 01-27-2008 07:28 AM

the quiet solo when billy bends the string at the start and screams the same note

i_adore_adore 01-27-2008 12:10 PM

The piano during the chorus of 1979. It makes me feel like my soul is trying to get out of my body so it can dance around in bliss.

this is a beautiful sentence. as i read it, it started to rain, as if this sentence caused the heavens to weep

Rickpat12 01-27-2008 02:41 PM

I could talk about this ALL day, but a few that stick out for me:

As mentioned the Angel.Barbed Wire. Fuck You. Desire.

The dual guitars in Galapogos right after would you leave me too, would you leave me too? And those two guitars lead into the mess with the undesiphered talking, and then back to the song. Pure brillance.

For Martha, when the piano gives in to the guitar solo.

The night has come to hold...us...YOOOOOUNNNNG and all the way to the fucking end!!!!

what? no one hates that song. people hate machina, but not that song.

and you're totally right. there's something that happens right as he sings "heart" in the "wrap my wire around your heart" line that i can't put my finger on but makes me feel.....funny. somehow. i don't know, it's weird.

BumbleBeeMouth 01-27-2008 03:32 PM

I wish i wish i wish I COULD LIEYIEEEEE

exactlythesame 01-27-2008 03:58 PM

cause i know youuuuu
you're love

. . .

when i lost my mind
i knew i was in for a long riiiiiiiiide

avsfan7733 01-27-2008 03:59 PM

has anyone mentioned the guitar soloish bridge on beautiful? That makes the song for me. I also love the fading outro with billy singing as it fades away

oh, and the ending of infinite sadness, when the bass runs up that ascending little scale. Makes me feel warm inside

exactlythesame 01-27-2008 04:01 PM

^

great moment there, too

"i'll be under the stars forever
neither here nor there, just right beside you"
