does anyone here NOT celebrate x-mas in any way?

I haven't bought or received (well, accepted) a gift on December 25th in like 5 years. probably since I moved out of my parent's house.

my family isn't really christian, except for my grandparents(who died in the early 90s). and we never had a tree or anything when I was a kid, but we did occassionally give gifts around the time of christmas, but we just stopped after a while and I never understood the whole thing anyway.

i don't get it. especially if one isn't christian, why celebrate the supposed birthdate of Jesus? is commercialism that infectious?!

western civilisation really is on the decline

It's fun to exchange gifts with people you care about. And it's a chance to see family and eat lots of food.

mxzombie 12-21-2007 12:07 PM

i'm trying. i haven't bought any gifts but my parents got me some things so now i just look like a selfish jerk

peabody 12-21-2007 12:07 PM

oh.

i guess i'm dead inside

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 12:14 PM

i'm forced to buy presents so i don't look so pathetic in front of my christian brother in law

peabody 12-21-2007 12:16 PM

i have always thought when i hear:

"oh crap i have to go christmas shopping!"
"i hate shopping for gifts!"
"oh the malls are gonna be crowded!"

that people really seem to resent the whole thing. and it's not about gift giving, it's about saving face and like that dude up there not looking pathetic or something.

i think gift giving is super. but i think it should be a labor of love, not a mandated "oh shit, i forgot to buy something on this arbitrary day!" process. seems really fake.

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 12:18 PM

isn't it clear that it is a cultural phenomenon that society forces on us through institutions such as family and the media

people may hate it to death and still buy presents for their loved ones

just like guys usually pay for drinks on a date

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 12:20 PM

if you think you are a truly free being, free of society and its violent force then you may reconsider using that language and wearing those socks

Mayfuck 12-21-2007 12:25 PM

People who are like "i dont get whats the big deal with christmas" are the worst. i'm not even a fan of christmas, i mean its okay one way or another. but people like that come out this time of year and pretend like they're in a ivory tower and feign ignorance to why so many people get into this holiday are just as obnoxious.

aurel 12-21-2007 12:25 PM

Go Peabody! I too became disillusioned with the comercialism of the Christmas season. That's why I no longer accept gifts and channel all of the time money and energy I would have spent on Christmas gifts into my non-profit organisation, Handjobs for the homeless on the holidays.

peabody 12-21-2007 12:26 PM

it's fox news' fault isn't it?

thats such a cutting edge point of view peabody. i dont think i've seen anyone had this kind of gripe before. you really illuminate things we don't normall thinky about this time of year. or is it things we are just too afraid to think about?

aurel 12-21-2007 12:27 PM

It's like he's thinking what we're all saying.

peabody 12-21-2007 12:28 PM

julio hates everything i say and do. it's because i'm white and went to private school.

peabody 12-21-2007 12:39 PM

julio reminds me of a latino male version of bunifa from mad tv. i could post a thread about my mom being in a wheelchair and me going to visit her or that i got a new teaching job or that my class passed their ISAT tests...or anything really.

and he'd come into the thread and point out my ivory tower and my boring personality and try to say something about how i am a spoiled rich kid from the suburbs. or something.

CHRISTMAS IS A PAGAN TRADITION, JESUS CHRIST

ravenguy2000 12-21-2007 01:04 PM

I'm not giving any gifts this year, but I have some music I'm going to give to some siblings I hope they like. There's some books and nick-nacky things I'm going to give to people but in going to see family I'd probably do that Christmas or not. And I'll cook but again it's not really a Christmas thing anyway, that's just what we like to do as a family. Oh and there's a tree up in my house but I didn't participate in putting it up.

Quiet CD 12-21-2007 01:34 PM

I got my parents gift cards (the only other gift I got was for my s/o), they have put so much into me over the last couple of decades, its a minor way I can show them some thanks. It works on a number of levels, part of it is that they will be happy that I'm successful enough to be able to afford to buy them anything. We don't do the tree, we don't dance around in a circle chanting in tongues around a plastic baby jesus. We see each other, we say we love each other and thats about it.

I love Christmas shopping, I love buying gifts for people I love.

I think that the people who dont like christmas are mainly the people who had shitty christmas's when they were younger. It was always a big deal in my house growing up, my mom would decorate the whole house and do lots of baking, the whole family gets together.

There is so much shit in this world, people are so unhappy, whats wrong with having a special day where people get together and buy gifts for each other and hang out and have fun?

that sounds super

tear stained glass 12-21-2007 02:33 PM

i dig the sales. i don't even mind the crowds on the day after thanksgiving and the day after christmas at south coast plaza.

Netphorian Gadabout 12-21-2007 02:39 PM

I have never received, nor given a Christmas gift, nor have I ever wished anyone a Merry Christmas or anything like that.

my whole family is christian and we don't even really do the gift thing. it's usually me buying relatively cheap gifts for my family (no extended, just mom and dad and siblings) and getting $50 from my parents.

it's more about the rare chance of everyone getting together under one roof to enjoy each other's company.

i have never went "christmas shopping" (went to the store specifically to buy christmas gifts), i'll just see random things that catch my eye through the month of december and buy usually one thing for everyone.

peabody 12-21-2007 03:08 PM

and if you add presents to the equation!

peabody 12-21-2007 03:12 PM

that's why i said supposed. merely thought to be such. not supported by evidence. assumed as true by many people.

did that not make sense?!

ravenguy2000 12-21-2007 03:13 PM

i wish bluestar could come back just for this thread

That's exactly what I thought you meant. Pretzel, you dunce.

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 03:38 PM

i didn't know giving and receiving gifts was this loosely attached to american culture

i don't know anybody who doesn't celebrate christmas with all that it entails

It's not even thought to be supposed. It's just a random fucking day they picked. Get it?!?!

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 03:48 PM

pretzel logic is right. as far as i know even the bible implies that jesus was born in summer

peabody 12-21-2007 03:52 PM

you guys obviously don't get the multiple usages of the word supposed.

i'm so bored at work.

we should have a word usage fight or something.

Good. The Internet often causes a communication breakdown.
