that's why i said supposed. merely thought to be such. not supported by evidence. assumed as true by many people.

did that not make sense?!

ravenguy2000 12-21-2007 03:13 PM

i wish bluestar could come back just for this thread

That's exactly what I thought you meant. Pretzel, you dunce.

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 03:38 PM

i didn't know giving and receiving gifts was this loosely attached to american culture

i don't know anybody who doesn't celebrate christmas with all that it entails

It's not even thought to be supposed. It's just a random fucking day they picked. Get it?!?!

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 03:48 PM

pretzel logic is right. as far as i know even the bible implies that jesus was born in summer

peabody 12-21-2007 03:52 PM

you guys obviously don't get the multiple usages of the word supposed.

i'm so bored at work.

we should have a word usage fight or something.

Good. The Internet often causes a communication breakdown.

Wasn't random at all. The December 25th was a very popular pagan holiday. They specifically chose that day, co-opting it. Pretzel, you dunce.

peabody 12-21-2007 03:56 PM

it's me and alex vs. pretzel and cherub.

we're gonna get creamed.

Debaser 12-21-2007 03:58 PM

Alex squared

It often solves communication breakdowns, too. Pretzel, you dunce.

how's life my somewhat asian doppleganger?

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 04:00 PM

debaser is of course right. holidays develop like all cultural phenomenons and are basically mashups of all kinds of influences. i thought pretzel logic's point was that no sane and intelligent person would claim that it is the actual day of his birth. nobody pretends that was true. unlike they do with the existence of god etc

Debaser 12-21-2007 04:00 PM

My life is pretty damn boring. I need a mid-life crisis or something to change things up.

That's what I meant. It's not exactly random like I said it was, but the New Testament never mentions a birth date of Jesus. The Church didn't base it off a pagan date, so I don't know why Debaser would bring that up.

i think you'd be surprised how many middle america christians think december 25th is when jesus was born. and how 33 years later he was killed by the evil romans and floated up into cloud city.

jczeroman 12-21-2007 04:04 PM

I wouldn't but my wife makes me.

Rockin' Cherub 12-21-2007 04:04 PM

romans? you mean jews

Pretzel Logic 12-21-2007 04:05 PM

He was killed by the Romans technically.

peabody 12-21-2007 04:05 PM

no i mean romans.

jews were comlpicit. but romans were the rulers...

So its just a coincidence that they picked the same date of popular pagan winter festivals?

peabody 12-21-2007 04:06 PM

complicit.

i don't like the edit feature.

i own up to my mistakes!

Yeah, why would the Catholic Church EVER associate the birth of the savior with paganism?

Debaser 12-21-2007 04:07 PM

Mel Gibson makes it quite clear that those damn dirty jews pretty much forced those poor romans to kill jesus.

They didn't associate it with paganism. They wanted to replace a pagan holiday with their own.
