sure

-my parents moving out of the country and leaving me in miami for school
this, for a while, made me feel bitter and abandoned by my parents as i was left to do things on my own like fix my car and pay for things i hadn't previously paid for. i'm over it now, although i still only talk to my parents once every month or two and they don't like that very much, but our relationship is better now that we're not so close

-moving in with my girlfriend and subsequently living in miami full-time as opposed to staying in my parents' old house an hour north during school breaks until they sold it
after my parents left, i lived alone in a dorm or in their house for a year and got kind of used to doing my own thing. i moved in with her for my sophomore year of college and since then i've learned tons of things about how to live comfortably with another person, incl. doing chores, splitting costs, compromising, etc. really valuable stuff. also, living in miami full-time meant i would spend my breaks from school here and actually be able to call it home, which, after living in the same, relatively isolated place for 12 years, really gave me a renewed sense of freedom and a hunger to get to know miami.

-smoking weed (didn't smoke until freshman year of college and now i generally smoke every night)
this has changed my outlook on life in general. i don't know. i think the effects of this change have been mostly in what it's motivated me to do, like meet people, travel around florida with my girlfriend, and become aware of social issues surrounding its use

aurel 12-20-2007 09:59 AM

What's the last book you read that inspired/deeply affected you? Brifely explain how and why it affected you.

during freshman year of college i read richard feynman's book "the pleasure of finding things out." i was halfway through my first really challenging semester in college and i was starting to run out of steam and lose motivation, but reading that book sort of invigorated my hunger to learn and made me appreciate what i was learning and how valuable an opportunity i had been given by going to college and pursuing engineering, something i love.

aurel 12-20-2007 10:14 AM

Been meaning to check out Feynman and that sounds like a good place to start, cheers.

dean_r_koontz 12-20-2007 10:14 AM

mxzombie 12-20-2007 10:16 AM

dean_r_koontz 12-20-2007 10:17 AM

and aurel, if you want to read about a guy who's even more awesome than feynman and not as pc as feynman, check out craig venters book a life decoded. i haven't read it yet but i will this christmas and i know it will be great.

Intriguing man from what I've just read. Will see if my library has it. Thank you.

1. best qualities: she's really smart and really good at what she's studying (art history). she is organized and a good influence on me in that respect. not to mention she's cute
2. we have been dating since may of 2005, so about 2 1/2 years
3. marriage is an option, but not for a while. she wants to go to grad school and we both want to be out of school before we really consider getting married. i'm still not entirely settled on whether or not i want to get married at all
4. we rarely argue because she's good at arguing and i'm not

Did you feel disappointed that I never sent you a postcard during the postcard exchange? My old computer blew up so I no longer have the address, feel free to pm me for a postcard.

This issue has been weighing on my conscience more than I would have expected.

i think i forgot to send my own out, too, and it would be quite hypocritical for me to expect anything in return for doing nothing. so don't worry about it, turns out i might get to hang out with a real, live kiwi this weekend

SlingeroGuitaro 12-21-2007 10:59 AM

autobots or decepticons?
