Would you not tip if you had horrible service at a restaurant?

I was out with four friends after taking a final and we went to Ruby's, that shitty 50's throwback restaurant. All of us ordered drinks: 4 milkshakes, 1 Coke. We waited 20 fucking minutes until my one friend said something to the host. After than 20 minutes, the waitress finally comes over with the drinks, still without my Coke, so I had to remind her that I had ordered one. Then she took our order. The food came out at a reasonable time. When it came time for the check, I said we weren't tipping. Everyone thought I was the biggest asshole for even saying that. I think we put the regular tip amount in. I was pissed. The waitress was black and so were two of the people I was with so I can see why they would tip, but the two others? It really shouldn't matter what race you are. If you get fucked over, it shouldn't matter.

Lola 12-18-2007 01:14 PM

was it really busy?

Pretzel Logic 12-18-2007 01:15 PM

No. And as far as I could see we were the only table she was waiting on.

Shapan 12-18-2007 01:19 PM

use to wait tables, so i always tip. its not an easy job, and waiters or waitresses usually don't have things against they're customers, they're just busy doing shit.

yeah. but i tip better if the service is good.

Lola 12-18-2007 01:23 PM

Ive not left a tip before if they were really bitchy or really shitty. Im a waitress and ive never forgotten anyones food or drinks, its not exactly a hard job but somtimes there are circumstances, maybe it was really busy or she was new, maybe they had her doing somthing else... I dont know. Also why would they tip her just because shes black, I wouldnt tip someone because theyre white that doesnt make any sence.

Pretzel Logic 12-18-2007 01:26 PM

It was obvious the two black girls wanted to tip the black waitress. They were making excuses for her. Black people usually stick up for black people.

Shapan 12-18-2007 01:30 PM

racist much

Corganist 12-18-2007 01:31 PM

That sounds like the type of service that gets a shitty tip (< 10 percent), not the type that deserves no tip at all. For me, the service has to be uniformly bad all the way around before I think about drastically reducing the tip. And I think even the worst service deserves some kind of tip, even if it's just a few cents to send the message "the service sucked" instead of "I'm a cheapskate and I just didn't want to leave a big tip."

It does suck though when you're with a group and you want to make a statement with a low tip and everyone else is throwing out 20-25 percent of their bill because they used to wait tables in a former life, making you look like the cheap asshole. But sometimes you have to be alone in your principles.

Yeah, I agree. One kid even talked about how he was a waiter and how pissed he gets when people don't tip haha.

megathread.

Irridescent Fairysex 12-18-2007 01:38 PM

You know? you tip for the service provided to you, it's a gesture of appreciation for all the work involved in the manner you are treated. Maybe the waitress efficiency and suggestions at that restaurant helped you get head. Maybe it was what your date needed to open up you know? Maybe the smile of the delivery pizza boy made the mushrooms on your pizza more delightful and made you think how life is good sometimes.

So it's ok to tip, tipping is ok. But this is not an entirely positive world, we have positives and negatives, ying and yang, whites and blacks, sigfried and roy, the whatcolors and the duovamps. You may wonder, what if the service provided to me was awful? what if the waitress' bad mood prevented a wonderful night of cunningulus? this is the time where you have to negative tip. Sometimes karma is not enough or is too long to wait for and you have to take action. Become an active tipper, be it good or bad, you have to keep tipping.

How can I negative tip? you might be asking to yourself now, and it's a valid question. It's not that difficult, you just have to think outside the box. While subtracting money from the tip jar or out of a bad waitress pocket could seem like the most viable solution, it's not entirely appropriate. It might also be illegal. What you should do is put that hamster in your brain to spin the wheel of creative negative tipping. Report the waitress to the manager, tell him how you found pubes in your soup, bam, he's fired. Poor waiter can't afford college now? what are you listening? ohh that's the sound of instant karma. Find out who the waitress' girlfriend is, take her to bed and fuck her with only the tip of your penis. Classy.

its definitely inappropriate to leave a low tip if youre with a group.
if i was in that situation and i felt really strongly about it i would try to talk the others into realizing there's no fucking way the awful waitress is getting 10 percent for her bad service, but i dont think id let others pay more because i chose to pay less than 10 percent.
as it wounds up, im only screwing my friends over and the bad waitress still gets her way

theres some truth to that, but some things are worth the trouble and some dont
if its a huge bill and a huge tip, fine, tip badly
but if its a matter of change and youre willing to strike up an argument about it and let your friends pay for you just cause youre a man of principles, youve got a problem

No no. See, that's the herd mentality. I'm not "letting my friends pay for me." THEY'RE the ones with the problem. Nobody HAS to "pay for me." I'm paying my bill for what I ordered. Tips are not a guarantee. They're not "covering" me. I'm paying for what I bought. If I choose not to tip and they insist on throwing in extra to cover it, that's their problem, not mine. I choose not to reward shitty service

sppunk 12-18-2007 01:55 PM

It's not your job to pay their salary. Especially if they have a piss-poor performance on the clock.

Amen. One time this waiter straight up gave me attitude when I was at a restaurant with a bunch of friends. I was being nothing but nice, but the dude insisted on giving me shit, I guess cause he didn't like the looks of me or something. So when it came time to tip, I said 'no way' and my friends we're all 'wahh wahh he works for a living blah blah communism wahh wahh genocide in darfur' So they 'tipped for me' which is condescending and frustrating cause it totally neutered the statement I was trying to make, and the waiter never got the message. It felt like they didn't respect me enough to let me take my own stand on that guy being a dickhead.

ella 12-18-2007 01:56 PM

Ehhh i'd just tip a very small amount, I rarely don't leave a tip, I mean even a dollar helps.

Last week at a mexican restaurant they charged my credit card twice, so I went home and got online to check my bank statement and sure enough instead of $20 worth of food, they charged me $40. I was so pissed. So I just called them up, and they HUNG UP ON ME, so I called them again, and they told me to come in the next day. Yeah and I wasn't even being mean on the phone, the only reason they hung up on me was that they were getting ready to close....i'm almost positive that's why. assholes.

logically you are absolutely right, but thats just not the kind of thing you do to
your friends. at least not regularly.
if its only me and a bunch of people i dont really care about, i act the same as you.
but with close friends its the kind of actions that tend to stir shit up.

but.. i'm not doing anything... to my friends....

I did, they told me to get the restaurant to fax them some information or something. When I told the manager that he just ignored me and gave me my money back.
