Getting Groups to Sing

Let's say it's someone's birthday and you want to sing Happy Birthday in unison. You are the leader of the singalong. What do you do?

wally 12-17-2007 10:57 PM

Sources close to me say that I'm in the wrong for doing it the correct way musically.

redbull 12-17-2007 11:15 PM

you count 123 because there are pickup notes!

wally 12-17-2007 11:51 PM

bzzt

wrong, but you're on the right track

redbull 12-17-2007 11:55 PM

FUCK YOU KIWI

Skylarq 12-18-2007 12:10 AM

i said 123 but that is because i sing happy birthday with polka instrumentation in 3/4

monkeyfritters 12-18-2007 12:29 AM

happy birthday IS in 3/4. omg i just noticed this! and there is a pickup note!

ohnoitsbonnie 12-18-2007 12:38 AM

Uno dos tres cuatorce!

ohnoitsbonnie 12-18-2007 12:39 AM

That had to be my most annoying post ever. I'm sorry wally. To answer your question, I don't count at all.

bardy 12-18-2007 01:10 AM

yeah who the heck counts for happy birthday? usually just one person starts and everyone else joins in

but if I were going to count I guess I picked 1 2 3 4 because a lot of songs are in 4/4

Shapan 12-18-2007 01:30 AM

123 GO

my mind secedes 12-18-2007 01:34 AM

The correct answer is to count "1, 2" since the song is in 3/4 time with a one beat anacrusis into the first full measure. Jeez.

wHATcOLOR 12-18-2007 02:09 AM

a-one and a-two, and a-one two three four

i feel like a weirdo for thinking this through in my head after reading the initial post.

i mean. it's fucking happy birthday. who counts that shit off.

Eulogy 12-18-2007 10:23 AM

i've also never heard the word "anacrusis" in my life.

Mo 12-18-2007 10:27 AM

One two three five.

Ahahahahaha.

Sonic Johnny 12-18-2007 10:31 AM

you guys are all tame. i just sing happy birthday in whatever time signature i feel like. the last time it was 3/4 (or for the sake of consistency 6/8) played as a heavily swung 5/8 by shifting the first two accents onto their downbeats and playing the notes of the original accents as the upbeats, thus eliminating the 6th accent somewhere along the line and making it a sneaky pseudo- 5/8 groove ala Chris Pennie.

Thaniel Buckner 12-18-2007 10:33 AM

god im a retard.

i voted for the wrong one.

1, 2 ... is the correct answer.

wally 12-18-2007 02:36 PM

indeed. same goes for the National Anthem, but that's less common for a quick sing-a-long.

Don't get me started about the Pledge and the phantom comma after "One Nation"

Thaniel Buckner 12-18-2007 02:51 PM

the pause is even longer if you take "under god" out of it.

I feel like I would start with the 1, 2, 3 option.
I usually just hold out Haa-- until enough people join in.

wally 12-18-2007 08:34 PM

people in my family think I'm an idiot for going with the musically appropriate version

Pretzel Logic 12-18-2007 08:44 PM

one, two, three, fawr!

In my family, we all just kind of stare awkwardly at each other for a few seconds before someone takes it upon themselves to just start singing. Then everyone else follows that person's lead.

Pretzel Logic 12-18-2007 08:48 PM

Corganist, run as fast as you can to put the fire out on the SP board.

bardy 12-18-2007 11:28 PM

I dunno for chorus we'd always get the hand conducting giving us the tempo and the cue I've never been in a BAND

I'm down with becoming the new comedy option. It would bolster my infamy.

Ever 12-19-2007 07:57 AM

Said duovamp the ovum pad.
