who wants to help me solve all my wireless internet problems

i just bought a wireless router and of course i already have a list of programs that don't work amongst other things

so these are the apps that aren't working (i'm running a macbook pro with tiger)

msn messenger
last.fm client
mail (the mac os x app)

there are probably more but these are the ones that have stood out so far. i've tried portforwarding but i need dns addresses to make a static ip or something, and i can't find those out.

also i can't connect my dad's laptop to the wireless network (it's running windows xp) and have tried a bunch of things to do this but nothing seems to work

any help is good, thanks

It's weird that you can connect to the internet generally, but that specific programs aren't working. Apologies if this is obvious to you, but go into your System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall and see what you've got blocked.

I can help more from home as I have a similar setup. I take it the wireless is not an Airport?

i went to that thing you said to go to and it just says firewall off. so i guess it doesn't matter what's ticked?

hey c_love perhaps you should've started small and figured out if anyone here wanted to help you with one or two of your wireless internet problems.

it's really only one problem though now, because i got my dad's computer working with it

based on the little you've told, the apps probably can't send info out because of your firewall settings.

your machine should get an IP from the router, most likely 192.168.x.x... go to System Preferences > Network to figure it out.

your router should port forward based on an IP, that is the IP you should use. if there is an option for a DMZ host, set it to that IP also

What I've got is I connect to the router via DHCP. Router (Airport) configures IPv4 manually. Aaaaaaand I'm realizing I was confused enough setting up my own thing to get torrents working right, so I can't really be of any assistance whatsoever. This shit is confusing.

have you tried disabling the firewall on the router?
