computer/dsl question

i've moved back in with my parents and they have verizon dsl. whenever i'm uploading something (on soulseek/dc++/torrents) and the upload kbps goes above, oh, about 10 kbps it kills my download speed. i can only download at about the same speed as i'm uploading. normally i can download at about 80 kbps. i was just wondering if anyone had any idea why this might be happening and maybe what i could do about it.

are you manually configuring the port forwarding or using UPnP?
