Tonight, Tonight is Vanilla, revamped
TT's main chord progression is taken from Vanilla, as well as the G -> G/C chord progression of TT's second verse.
Thought that detail will interest some. |
I just realized I listen to Vanilla much more then TT.
|
its only one of the most generic standard chord progressions there is
|
G -> D -> Em -> Am -> C
Don't know of too many songs using that, especially not in the SP catalogue, wherein Vanilla uses it, and then Tonight, Tonight uses it - as well as the G -> Gsus combo, which is also only shared between Vanilla and TT. Hence this thread's point. |
yeah but they're still all really standard obvious chords, virtually every progression has probably been done a million times already whether by sp or not
i don't hear much of a similarity between vanilla and tonight, though- the chords may be similar but the timing and strumming patterns are different |
This guy's a freakin' Gene Yuss.

That G-D-E part of the progression is especially common. I've run across it several times. One that come to mind is years ago I picked up a guitar magazine and strummed through the chord's to Jewel's "You were meant for me". "Hey, sounds like Tonight!" I thought. Indeed. Sing the Jewel chorus lyrics "eeee-ven after you're gone...I know, that you love me and... " while playing G-D-Em-Am-C. Jewel actually uses G-D-Em-C-D but you can play it with Billy's chord progression and it still sounds right.
The Vanilla chorus throws in the extra C-G on the end (that I've never cared for). I like Vanilla though. One of the only Reel Time songs Billy mostly sang in tune. If Billy himself told me he didn't take the main riff from Vanilla for the live Porcelina outro I wouldn't believe him. That's obviously where it came from. |
You really think after the hundreds and hundreds of songs Billy has written in the last 20 years he'll never come close to repeating himself? It would be basically impossible for him not to. Billy probably hasn't even thought of 'Vanilla' in years. But no, he definately stole it from Vanilla on purpose

G-D-Em-Am-C is a I-V-vi-ii-IV in the key of G major. It is a slight variation on the I-V-ii-IV progression that is one of the most common progressions used in rock music. It is VERY common for guitar players to use a variation on this progression. The key of G is also VERY heavily used in popular music because it lends itself perfectly to the easy to play open chords on the guitar. The fact that the progression is similar in Vanilla and TT is meaningless as far as an analysis of BC's songwriting is concerned, it is simply too common. Disarm among many other SP songs is a textbook, although more interesting, variation of this progression.

Plus Billy originally, like, wrote TT in C, and stuff
Right I don't know what I'm talking about at all |
Disarm
|
Disarm is in the key of G major with a vi-IV-I-V progression for the verse. It is textbook in that it never leaves G major and sticks to the usual open chords. But it is a more unusual progression than I-V-vi-ii-IV. Does that clear up your confusion xezton?
