contrary to popular belief you don't HAVE to put the cat to sleep...i would just dope it up with painkillers and let it die slowly
animals are probably more sentient than we realize and might not necessarily want to die w/ dignity

well he'd suffocate to death if we don't do something, as there's fluid building up around his lungs so they have less and less room to expand. either way i don't want him to go through that

give it to krazeestacee and it'll just die out of misery within hours

That really sucks, I'm sorry. Just focus on the happy life you gave him, be there with him so he feels safe, and cry as hard as you can. After he's gone look at all the pictures you have of him and cry. It helps. Remember what a great friend he was.

I feel somewhat lucky in that all of my cats have run off and died away from home. I can't imagine what you must be going through.

yeah i haven't had to deal with any close family or friends dying before this. it's pretty rough :(
