The only show I like that's been mentioned in this thread is Futurama. I could see myself getting into South Park, but I've only seen 2 or 3 episodes before. I gave the Venture Brothers an honest to goodness chance on the recommendation of a good friend and honestly couldn't see what people find so funny in that show... It just feels real contrived to me.
I can't even remember the last ep of the Simpsons that I sat through that wasn't a rerun from my childhood. :erm: |

that may be true but still, i'd rather watch the most contrived episode of venture bros. than watch one more family guy "this reminds me of the time i ___'d _____ with ____ on ____" shitfest of an episode.

king of the hill ftw.
|
i kept wanting to make a KOTH appreciation thread for the past couple weeks but i kept forgetting to whenever i was logged in here. probably redundant now with this thread
|
i don't care what anyone has to say, KOTH is really funny.
some hit or miss, as it is for every show, but still pretty solid. |

KOTH is great. Very under-appreciated.
Yep. |
i dont know about king of the hill being 'great' but it has been on for 10 seasons now so it obviously has a fan base. i think what i like about it the most is that among animated sitcoms you will not find a single one that isn't rooted in irony or complete absurdity. the only one whose plots are something that can occur very much in real life is KOTH. i think its refreshing from that aspect plus i dont know why but i find the character hank hill to be hilarious

South Park is funny but every bit as guilty as Family Guy and the Simpsons for relying on formula...
typical South Park episode: -stereotype or movie genre or current event is exploited and exaggerated to ridiculous proportions -whole town turns into a mob of dumbshits -dramatic music throughout just in case you didn't get the joke -random gross-out/humiliation scene -show ends when Stan and or/Kyle "have learned something today"... you know, in case you didn't realize the episode was a parody of some idea or belief held by a segment of the population. South Park's superiority to it's competition is in that the humor always flows from the characters and their interactions with eachother. Both Family Guy and the Simpsons are guilty of constantly betraying the nature of their characters in order to get a laugh, or to force them through (in the Simpsons case) a retarded plot. I mean, that episode where Lisa tried turning Willie into a gentlemen is fucking painful. Family Guy is usually painful when it tries to actually have a real plot instead of a bland template for telling random jokes. There is very little to distinguish one episode of Family Guy from the next. Its not horrible, its just not particularily memorable. When South Park and Futurama characters go on wacky adventures its a seamless thread simply because that is exactly what their internal world allows for. South Park is centered around a foursome of foul-mouthed fourth graders and Futurama is set a thousand years in the future. There isn't the akwardness of the Simpsons or Family Guy parading around the planet for no particular reason. As a matter of ettiquette, what they should be offering is social satire through the lens of typical, albeit dsyfunctional american families. After all, thats exactly what the characters ostensibly are lampooning. Once upon a time the Simpsons did that with perfection. Seasons 3-8 were gold. |
i'm so embarrassed that i used to like Family Guy. i just sold my DVDs of the first two season.

bobby hill is my fave.
|
C'mon the Family Guy hate is ridiculous. The first two seasons had a bunch of great gags. The newer seasons are pretty bad though.
|
the first season of FG is atrocious, poorly animated and generally kind of a simpsons rip. There's some good stuff inbetween the oldest and the newest, but it's really just a show for cheap laughs and the new seasons aren't very objectionable when you consider that.

I desire...
I desire... ...macaroni pictures. |
south park truly is hit or miss though, some seasons better than others
|
south park truely is starting to wane for me. i dont think i'd cry a river if its end was around the corner
|
agreed. i really didn't care much for the last season. best episode i saw recently was Cartman freezing himself so he didn't have to wait for the Wii and ending up in the future.
|
i think i lot of the shows the humor gets to have less basis and along the line they forget exactly what they're satyrizing
|
hi craig
