The Thin Red Line received mostly mediocre reviews.

The reviews are what made me go see this crappy movie. 79% Fresh rating on Rottentomatoes.

Most of the ones I saw at the time all blasted it, and called the director out of touch.

Kilgore Trout 05-29-2002 04:29 PM

I also hated Life is Beautiful, that Bertoilini guy is too happy it's annoying.

And really, all of the good views were mostly there because the Terrence Malick hade made a couple really good movies in the past. Critics are like that. They're afraid to admit when someone with a good record fucks up.

No, no.. I've gotten two movies confused. I liked out of sight.. but I guess maybe the movie I saw last year didn't have George Clooney in it.. *shrugs* I'll shut up now.

You people would love El Topo. If you can dig up a copy. Or maybe Salo.

The Salo DVD goes for over $100 on ebay. Looks like I won't be seeing it anytime soon.

Natural Born Killers and Scarface are completely unwatchable. Graveflower is right on the money: Oliver Stone movies are utter shit.

American Beauty is ok but completely over-rated and totally simplistic.

American Pie is terrible. It's sequel manages to be even worse.

Mallrats is terrible. The acting in it is just fucking inexcusable. Jason Lee is plain rancid. The directing is pretty slap-dash as well.

I hated Magnolia. But to be fair, it's hard to enjoy a movie when the soundtrack consists entirely of Aimee Mann songs.

relaxor! 05-30-2002 02:19 AM

I really didn't like A Beautiful Mind

while I personally totally disagree with "Natural Born Killers", I think you couldn't be more on the ball about "Mallrats"

I think Oliver Stone started to lose it with Natural Born Killers, which started a devolving trend that led to the forgettable U-Turn. However, films like JFK, the Doors, and even Wall Street are prefect showcases of his talent.

Further proof that he's completely lost it: he's now doing a documentary on Arafat. I guess he can't do coherent feature films anymore.

YES! YES! YES! FINALLY! Thanks for reminding me about that one. I couldn't even finish it. All of Kubrik's movies are like that. His arrogance gets in the way of his ability to edit movies. All of his shit (and I do mean shit) is dreadfully long. The Shining is pretty sorry, as far as I'm concerned. That woman who plays the doting wife/mother is just horrible and Jack Nicholson was acting far below his ability.

Speaking of Jack, A Few Good Men is really bad. I wanted to strangle Tom Cruise throughout the movie and I didn't like the fact that Demi Moore was as dumb as Cruise kept telling her. The only thing that made it memorable is Jack. And he was using about two thirds of his talent in that movie. Aaron Sorkin's script was amateurish, although his later work in television (Sports Night and The West Wing) is quite good.
