GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A Greenville woman was sent to the hospital and a Newberry woman was killed Saturday in a chain of violence that streteched from Greenville to Columbia on Saturday.

Columbia police arrested a Greenville man who faces murder and car-theft charges in Newberry County and armed robbery and assault charges in Greenville.

Demetrius Myshawn Pepper, 24, is jailed in Newberry, police said.

Pepper faces charges of assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in the armed robbery of a convenience store on Pendleton Street in Greenville about 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.

He faces murder and robbery charges in Newberry County, according to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before noon Saturday, Newberry County deputies found the body of Ellie Felker Halfacre, 60, at her home on the Interstate 26 frontage road.

Halfacre, a retired teacher, had been shot in the head. Her car was also missing.

"Just a good woman," Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said. "Great mother. Raised two fine children. Just a wonderful person in the community."

Shortly after discovering the homicide, investigators located the car police said Pepper was driving when he left the robbery scene in Greenville.

That car was found, broken down and abandoned, less than a mile from Halfacre's home.

Foster said there were two cars in Halfacre's front yard, both with keys inside.

"All he had to do was take the car," Foster said. "He didn't have to go in and kill her over a car."

Pepper was arrested near Williams-Brice Stadium in Coumbia, where Halfacre's car was also discovered, investigators said.

Police said Pepper's brother plays football for USC. The Gamecocks had a scrimmage at the stadium on Saturday.

"Fortunately he was apprehended before he could hurt anybody else," Greenville Police Lt. Mike Gambrell said.

Newberry County investigators traveled to Columbia to question Pepper and then returned him to Newberry.

During the robbery in Greenville, a clerk at the store was shot in the face, police said. The clerk was wounded in the cheek and was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Police said that Pepper is a co-worker of the clerk who was shot.

Investigators said two witnesses called 911 to report the armed robbery. When officers arrived, they said they found the clerk had been shot and money was scattered on the floor.

Police said that after the robbery, Columbia Police informed Greenville Police that Pepper had been arrested there.

Newberry investigators said that there does not appear to be a link between the homicide and the robbery in Greenville
