question for college students..

im taking a calc class right now, and i completely fucked up the midterm because i showed up late for it and was pressed for time. even if i got an A on the final i think it would be hard to even get a B in the class. most of my math teachers give you leeway if you ace a final, but this one doesnt seem like one of them.

im gonna try and get the professor to make it pass/not pass(i dont think this'll be too hard, otherwise i could stick with grades i spose), and im already pretty set on just taking it next quarter so my grade can better reflect my capability. this pretty much means i wont give a fuck about it the rest of this quarter because i already want to take it again next quarter so i can ace it, something i cant do this quarter. its almost like a withdraw i suppose, but im keeping it there because as a transfer im only taking 14 units, and i cant take under 12. the next two quarters im taking 20.

have any of you guys done anything like this?

ammy 11-09-2006 03:32 PM

for those who tl;dr ...

he fucked up his calc test, which fucked his grades.
he will ask to get pass/fail instead of grade, but either way be retaking the class next semester to make up the grade

anyone else done this?

avian chaos 11-09-2006 03:33 PM

Quarters?

And no. Sorry :(

p.s. ilu

Shapan 11-09-2006 03:33 PM

hah good stuff ammy

Shapan 11-09-2006 03:34 PM

yeah, we work with the quarter system in University of California schools, pretty much goes as the season goes. 10 week quarters, it works pretty well.

tear stained glass 11-09-2006 03:36 PM

i failed a math class that i should've dropped, but i retook it and got an a. your situation sounds like it's not as bad as mine, so you should be ok with that course of action. hopefully the f won't kill me in the future. i mean, my gpa is 3.775 right now due to the grade replacement policy. but yeah, i might just end up joining ****** at mcdonalds someday.

i dont want to drop it simply because it would put me under 12 units. im not 100% sure if the consequences if that, but i want to take 20 units next quarter and the quarter after that, and i dont want to be restricted with it. im planning on doing pass/no pass, not passing it, and retaking it so i actually have a chance to excel in it.

it'll show up on my transcripts is the annoying thing and pushes me back a quarter in math, but im going to take summer school to catch up.

Shapan! Where do you go to school? I live in California, too. I go to Humboldt State University.

Actually, come to think of it, my mom went to UCDavis and I recall her being on the quarter system and being thrown off because the school she transferred from was semesters.

ammy 11-09-2006 03:38 PM

man, quarters, i shouldn't have gone ot state for just that reason.damnit

tear stained glass 11-09-2006 03:39 PM

also, uci finals are 2 hours long. fuck that shit. granted, ammy and sammiches went to berkeley, so they probably had 20 hour finals, because from what i hear, they want to make their undergrad experience a living hell.

hah i think you're in good shape. my science classes make it hard enough to hover above a 3(and this was at UCR where the competition wasnt as bad), though im hoping i can jack it up some this quarter. thats why i dont want this stupid calc grade to bog me down and im going to retake it.

Man, anytime a Netphorian lives in California it's always down South! I live in the northern tip... Humboldt is on the North Coast, probably 5 or 6 hours north of SF.

ammy 11-09-2006 03:45 PM

i didn't realize humboldt was so far north!
i like the presense of californians in here. it's nice!

i'm in monterey btw.

sadly, we're all too far spread out.

Yeah, what he said! I hate Berkeley and the whole bay area, I'm always perplexed by the number of people I know who want to move there.

avian chaos 11-09-2006 03:46 PM

Ugh we need to organize something along the same lines as all those Canadian fools.

i understand some people want to go to berkeley because of the name and if you really want to be a lawyer its the school for you, but i dunno, i wouldnt want to go there. i guess im really attached to my family and wouldnt want to be so far, plus i like socal. i didnt get into ucla, but i definitely wouldve considered it though i like uci and liked ucr because they feel/felt like smaller communties while ucla is huge. thats probably why i didnt apply for transfer into ucla because its so big, but id kill to go there for grad school.

ammy 11-09-2006 03:50 PM

berkley is like half an hour from my mum's, that would have been nice.
i hate the campus, however... i would have liked sonoma, actually, as far as locaiton goes.

but anyway. i would have regretted the student loan payback for going there. too pricey!
i'll have a master's from naval postrgaduate school soonish, so that will make up for monterey's sucking. (the school i went to sucks)

yah cal states really give a great bang for your buck. i saw a random poll thing, cal state long beach ranked first as the best college for the best price. one of my best friends goes there.

i couldve gone to usc, but it wouldve put my parents in bankruptcy.

ammy 11-09-2006 03:53 PM

there's *alot* of cali phorians.

whatcolour, quietcd and brady come to mind...

montelds.. a bunchof people who don't post anymore..

avian chaos 11-09-2006 05:29 PM

There's also Sammiches in Berkeley, but I guess not a lot of Netphorians like her. I didn't know that until the other day.

I think I might have given you bad information about the distance from Humboldt to SF. I was thinking of the route you'd take if you went from Humboldt to Redding (which is home to me), and THEN to SF, which would be about 6 hours... but when you go from Humboldt to Redding you're mostly driving East, not South, so. Yeah.

My sister-in-law just graduated from Sonoma last semester... I went to her graduation and saw the campus for the first time. Holy crap! It's beautiful there.

I like our campus here in Humboldt a lot, despite the imminent smelly ass hippy that you always risk having to sit next to come classtime in lecture halls. One of the buildings here is on a hill and when you stand at the top of the stairs you can see the Humboldt Bay... It's especially beautiful on overcast days when the sun is just barely peeking through the clouds.

I don't think I'd want to live anywhere that was super flat everywhere you went. Talk about boring.

Mayfuck 11-09-2006 06:26 PM

California is ass fuck long. It doesn't feel like that since I can leave the state driving 3 hours east, but I was gonna try to go up redwood thanksgiving weekend and realized its a 13 hour drive, 19 if I wanted to take the scenic route.

avian chaos 11-09-2006 06:32 PM

Yeah, it's weird because I feel like most people don't even realize how big it is. Especially people that have only lived in one part of it their whole lives. Anytime I go down South people ask, "Where are you from?" "Northern California." "Oh, like San Francisco?" :erm:

Shapan 11-09-2006 06:39 PM

haha. kimmy are you gonna sign up for secret santa? hurry before the deadline

norcal and socal really do feel like two different states.

avian chaos 11-09-2006 06:45 PM

You're right, they should just split the state in two. Socal can be renamed JULIOVILLE.

I was going to sign up for Secret Santa but then I decided I'd rather send stuff to people I like rather than draw straws and risk having to give a gift to someone I either hate or have no recollection of ever seeing post...
