The Bridge

I didn't know committing suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge was such a common occurance. Do those of you who live in San Francisco hear about these suicides on the news everytime one takes place? Or is it not reported but secretly known by the community?

I wish I could see this right now. I don't think it's playing in San Antonio though.

High suicide rate in a town with so many fags. Very surprising.

What the hell, I thought this thread was about the Ace of Base album.

Shapan 10-28-2006 08:57 PM

we always heard it was common down in socal, one of my best friends goes to school up in menlo(half hour from san francisco) and he says it does actually happen. ive never asked about the frequency.

redbull 10-28-2006 09:01 PM

where's that confounded bridge?

duovamp 10-28-2006 09:05 PM

Is it a documentary? Where can I get information on it, this looks pretty interesting.

Boner 10-28-2006 09:13 PM

larry king had the documentarian who made the film on last night.

duovamp 10-28-2006 09:17 PM

I missed that one....

Ihaman 10-29-2006 12:03 AM

Yep, we spent a day in my infographics class studying this poster.

It's the policy of most newspapers not to report suicides.

That's a pretty humbling diagram. People's lives as tiny black squares among hundreds of others.

ammy 10-29-2006 12:15 AM

i'm confused about the suicide at #2

Shot himself. R.I.P. Johnny.

alisonmonster 10-29-2006 12:34 AM

they put up anti suicide barriers on one of the bridges in toronto - but it hasn't been confirmed if it does any good - or people just go look for another bridge to jump off of. I was reading it in Toronto Life magazine last week.

If I went to go kill myself, then found out I couldn't, I'd probably kill myself.

that's kinda what i'm wondering though, because if that's the case.. i dunno, the poster to me looks like it's trying ot press the point that the suicide barriers should be put up before more deaths happen or whatever, but if they *******d non-jumping suicides in thier stats.. well that's just bull!
BULL!!

BULL!!

Exactly. That whole diagram is now in question. I mean, is there even a bridge?

I saw something on it on Dateline NBC...

Basicly they put like 4 cameras fixated on the 4 most popular suicide spots on the golden gate bridge and filmed it for a year from morning until night. I think they had someone checking on the cameras but they werent manned 24/7.

The camera men had cell phones set to the anti-suicide cops on the bridge so if they saw someone go over the barrier and were about to attempt suicide, they could call and have them talked down. Apparently they saved one girl from suicide 3 times during their filming.

They said most people that went through with it just went up to the rail and jumped. They showed one guy who was just looking around like a normal tourist and then he climbed up and fell backwards "lost boys" style.

The film interviews the families of the suicide victims about the signs they showed and what not. One of the controversial things about the movie is the directors didnt tell the families they had video of their loved ones committing suicide when they interviewed them. They told them later but not initially.

Anywho it looked very good and very sad. On the dateline NBC thing they showed 8 people jumping. A few were old people which made you wonder "why?" one was a little petite gothy girl which once again made you wonder about the person. I dunno it was just an intriguing video. Made me really want to see the movie.

:(
The guy with the long hair who gets up on the barrier looks so calm, like he's just getting a better view...

Some of the people on www.projectw.org were supposed to secure a screener copy

if I happen to find a copy i'll definately post it here

bardy 10-29-2006 01:48 AM

I get really angry when there is traffic because some dude is standing on a overpass threatening to jump. I mean, come on, if you're going to do at least don't wreck my commute

neopryn 10-29-2006 01:50 AM

when i inevitably kill myself i think i'll jump from a bridge but i'd rather land on concrete

bardy 10-29-2006 01:52 AM

I think I'd OD on heroin

Shapan 10-29-2006 01:53 AM

on heroin? sounds like it could be painful.

sleeping pills maybe.

bardy 10-29-2006 01:54 AM

how would ODing on heroin be painful? maybe I need to change my approach.

I feel it would be faster than if I did it on sleeping pills

Fathoms (unadored) 10-29-2006 01:55 AM

Fucking down 10 grams of shrooms, 18 vats of beer, then do whatever the fuck you want to end the horror. it's all good.

duovamp 10-29-2006 01:57 AM

If I killed myself it wouldn't be from someplace high, like a tall bridge. I'm slightly scared of heights because I always think that the building or whatever is going to fall and I'll die... but I guess that'd be a good thing if I were searching for a place to kill myself. I'd have to do it in a place where I feel comfortable. And I'd like to be calm and warm if I did it. Falling through the air for a while then smacking into water would really kill my mood... and it'd be a bad way to end my day. I think I'd like to be laying outside, at night, looking up at the moon and the clouds, on a warm summer night, in a field somewhere. That sounds about right. As for the actual method, I dunno, I'd blow my brains out or inhale some toxic fumes, whatever, I'd be stone dead in a moment.
