best netphorian as a human being

who is the best person amongst us? not the best poster or best x or y, but the best all around human being. the most solid, virtuous, valuable person from us all.

if we had to elect one person from netphoria to get one of the few spots in an underground bunker in an apocalypse scenario, who would it be? if god was ranking us on the most universal and perfect terms who would be the best, be at the top? or if he was making magic cards for each of us, who would be the most valuable card? (i dont know magic cards so maybe that analogy doesnt fit)

sleeper 10-26-2006 08:08 AM

we can begin this as almost a process of elimination. let me contribute by saying anyone like toby, anyone even remotely similar to him, would automatically be disbarred. just try and imagine toby getting that spot in that bunker; its inconceivable. so, as a good frame of reference, we know that hes at one end of the spectrum. but who is at the other?

sleeper 10-26-2006 08:12 AM

as a guide, i think certain things would automatically preclude people from consideration:

1. if religious
2. if they have poor taste in music
3. if they post here suggesting themselves

Shapan 10-26-2006 08:13 AM

you'd probably need everyone to give an honest description of themselves as people and then have a vote, without letting them vote for themselves.

sleeper 10-26-2006 08:15 AM

i dont think you could expect any more honesty (actually less) in peoples description of themselves than you could in peoples behaviour on here. the latter is much more reliable on the whole

Shapan 10-26-2006 08:16 AM

if religious excludes people, would a general belief in God do the same?

sleeper 10-26-2006 08:17 AM

no, not at all

Mexicola 10-26-2006 08:22 AM

Terrible thread.

Shapan 10-26-2006 08:22 AM

hm it would be hard to single out people to eliminate or to pick someone to nominate.

im sure the rest of netphoria will find it easier to eliminate people, at the very least.

MusicMan4 10-26-2006 08:22 AM

pink_ribbon_scars now that shes off drugs

edit i'm sucking up to get her to like me again

Shapan 10-26-2006 08:24 AM

of all the people i can think of to nominate fathoms unadored and pale blue eyes come to mind

im trying to think of posts ive seen that have had some substance rather than sarcastic fluff looking for a quick giggle, even though all of us have had those

The idea of determining whether something, especially someone, is the "best" just becomes a silly popularity contest in any case, and I doubt there's any rules or parameters that can change that.

i was thinking of her too. she would probably get the job, but, you would know, how is her taste in music? perhaps that could be her weak card. she is an all around great human being though, its hard to object to her

i was thinking maybe deviousj or lucky day spa too, just because theyre both pretty honest, upright, intelligent guys without any fatal flaws. lucky day spa is a committed atheist as well, so thats a strong point in his favour. deviousj is only passively anti-religious i think, which might weigh him down in the running against such a close competitor as lucky day spa.

well, yeah, obviously, but its still fun and we can still kind of establish who is the the best or near the best. i know "best" doesnt make any sense when applied to human beings as a whole, its impossible to judge, but just think of that 1-seat-in-the-bunker scenario and think of who would get it

aurel 10-26-2006 08:29 AM

May I suggest that anyone who has ever used that smiley banging a hammer icon be disbarred also. Even used in an ironic fashion is no excuse.

Well certainly all those athiest people aren't going to be if god himself was ranking you.

Shapan 10-26-2006 08:29 AM

i dont know why the religion card is so bad. im personally a universalist and im not too religious, but ive seen people who are into their own religious views but are really tolerant of how everyone else thinks too.

agreed. smiley use in general is pushing it, but that one is particularly bad.

basically generic indie rock
the strokes, pedro the lion, elliott smith, sonic youth, silver jews, low all stand out from what i remember
i think she had a veruca salt cd but youthful transgressions can be forgiven

Prfft religion is for chumps.

Massive generalization here but I've noticed that the more religous people have seemingly cut off the part of their brain that accepts difference. What I mean by this is that any mention of pain or something at all 'dark' is completely ignored, in one ear out the other. It's incredibly amusing when you're alone wiht one of these people and you just keep persisting in a very distressful topic waiting for them to snap. I'm such a jerk I made this kid called Adam from school cry like that.

By the way the type of topic I talk about is the type we are discussing here, get the level of darkness?

without getting into a whole debate on this, i would see this roughly the same way as i would the taste in music: if someone likes nickleback, how good and virtuous a person could they possibly be? if someone believes that jesus is the son of god and was resurrected and so on, how intelligent is it even possible for them to be?

this apocalypse scenario would actually be great for this reason: itd be a fresh start for the human race, sans the "religious gene." this could only work in human kinds favour

its good that you made him cry. really, im being honest. these people have to have their beliefs challenged. theres no reason in the world why they should be given some kind of magical carte blanche, they should be made to justify their beliefs lik everyone else and if they cant than they have a moral obligation to abandon them
