game design software- recommendations?
 

i'm looking into getting an RPG writing engine but i really don't know which one to go for, having no experience with programming...i'd like to make something old school, snes-style graphics etc but with fairly sophisticated gameplay possibilities. any suggestions?

i would have thought that your best bet if you're doing it alone with no experience is to try and make a basic rpg using lds' favourite, Flash.

From that list, Darkbasic is cool but probably better suited to 3d first person stuff. I still stand by my Verge reccomendation.

izzle i say as a starter (obviously not using that lying rapist's recommendation) you make an rpg involving the gen board

the aim is to bring down cheez by convincing mistle to kill himself, then using his heartstrings to make a bow that you can fire monte's tears with. the soundtrack should be a combination of wolf eyes and mallow

Izzle, it might behoove you to learn some basic programming before you jump into it.

You should be able to follow logic, etc... here's a bit of pseudocode for ya:

If you can follow what is going on here, then great - if not, then pick a language, any language, and start trying to learn it.

If you go with Verge, for example, the backend is a variation on C. Darkbasic is obviously a variation of BASIC.

I don't know how you can make a good RPG without being a good programmer, you really should edumucate yourself something fierce. The RPG I'm creating most of the art for will be 2D and oldschoolish, but even that is being done in PHP by an adept programmer. If you want sophisticated gameplay possibilities I doubt you'll be able to easily use any engine :(
