Another tipping thread

When you have food delivered (pizza, chinese, etc.), how much do you typically tip the delivery person?

Short story: I just got yelled at for not tipping the delivery person 10%.

Long story: I just ordered chinese food from this place down the street (first time customer). When the delivery guy arrived, he called me from the lobby and refused to come upstairs (even though I buzzed him in and told the front desk clerk to let him upstairs). He also did not have a credit card receipt, he just had a regular receipt (granted, this very likely was not his fault in particular). So I had to wait around while he called it in and whatnot (not a short process). He then handed the phone to me to have me tell the guy how much I wanted to add for tip. I said $2.00. The guy then proceeded to not very nicely inform me that I needed to tip 10%. He kept going on and on about it. I was pretty pissed. All he did was deliver the food, why should I tip him 10%? He didn't take my order, bring it to my table, clear my table, refill my beverage, etc., etc. What did he do, other than bring my food in a timely manner, to deserve a tip?

do you mean to say that bringing your food in a timely manner is not tip-worthy?

Floppy Nono 06-28-2006 07:40 PM

fuck chinese food asians im surprised you didn't just kill him in the lobby and sell his clothes

i usually give them 2 bucks and they drive it to me from the other side of town...if he doesn't like it he can suck your balls

But he also refused to come upstairs, didn't have the right receipt, took a long time to get it all straightened out, etc. Why tip 10% for service I was not happy with? And why tip 10% for a delivery when they already charge extra for delivery? Is 10% the typical tip for delivery? Oh well, maybe I am just a really awful person.

i was asking more in general, not about this specific situation. you make some good points about already paying a delivery fee and him not going upstairs.

Well, yes, in general, it is tip-worthy. I just never thought of delivery as being 10% tip-worthy, though.

Karl Connor 06-28-2006 07:53 PM

the chinese place i get a food from expects a tip even when i come down to the store and pick up the stuff at the counter, which sucks because alot of times i'll spend $50 bucks on one order (yah. i love chinese food)

i stopped tipping them eventually and the next week they ripped me off and left out two orders of fried rice. i called and kindly asked about it and they acted like i was barking orders at them. silly chinese

but i guess in your situation, if you find service unsatisfactory you're entitled to a stingy tip i'd assume. i dunno about the legalities of that though

BlueStar 06-28-2006 08:18 PM

Isn't tipping $2-$5 the norm in most cases? 10% doesn't seem like a little bit much?

Karl Connor 06-28-2006 08:21 PM

i think its %15 in texas. could be way off tho

but i personally just toss them 5 bucks regardless. if i had money that'd be another story

For delivery, though? A tip of 15%-20% is typical for a restaurant, but not for a simple delivery. Would you tip the bellhop 10% of your hotel bill?

Karl Connor 06-28-2006 08:26 PM

yeah delivery and such im not so sure

im a broke ass college student so, if somebody wants to provide me service they're getting 2-5 bucks regardless of what i just bought

Nimrod's Son 06-28-2006 08:27 PM

I will rarely tip any delivery person over $3

Floppy Nono 06-28-2006 08:43 PM

anyone who tips any kind of delivery at any kind of price more then 3 bucks at most are total fucking idiots...ESPECIALLY if they only had to walk down the street to deliver it

i dont' care if the guy had to drive across town

his job is to sit in his car and listen to music and smoke cigarettes and then every now and then walk 20 feet and make change

fuck him

Floppy Nono 06-28-2006 08:49 PM

thats what im saying...at the most he used less then a full gallon of gas and 3 bucks pays for that and more around here...he gets his own fucking pay too doesnt he? why should i have to pay for him to buy his fucking japanese tentacle porn

Effloresce 06-28-2006 09:30 PM

I had a waitress in a restaurant once that treated me like shit, so I left her a dime for a tip

Luke de Spa 06-28-2006 09:43 PM

well 15% is the standard, but a lot of people in Texas still tip 10%.

KrazeeStacee 06-28-2006 09:55 PM

Usually our orders for delivery aren't much over $20 so $2 would be fine in that situation. If it's the nice guy that we always see from the pizza place, then sometimes we'll make it $3 but I really don't think it should be something based on the amount of food you order...he's just driving it to you and like you said, there's a delivery charge anyway.

BlueStar 06-28-2006 10:06 PM

And the stupid thing is (I can't believe I didn't stop to think about this earlier), 10% of my bill would have been $2.80. So, I got yelled at over $0.80.

How much was the entire order, in price? And how much food total did you order? Because if you ordered like two items and they were like 25 bucks then he only had to carry two things and you paid close enough to 10%. Plus, was the delivery person in his/her mid twenties? You can assume that people who are younger need the money for college or something. Or if they're older, they might have kids. I mean, yeah, sometimes you can decrease the tip amount for crappy food, but what the fuck, if you're paying fifty dollars for food I think you could shell out an extra three bucks to make the 10%. Plus, you're supposed to tip 15% around here.

thanks captain obvious...your wisdom is glorious

duovamp 06-28-2006 10:17 PM

Thanks even more captain your-joke-is-a-decade-old.

agenda suicide 06-28-2006 10:18 PM

I don't expect people to tip me with take out orders, but it really pisses me off when we do catering that gets up into $200 $300 etc and the people don't tip.

Floppy Nono 06-28-2006 10:19 PM

you mean they don't leave you anything even after they lay their eyes on that badonkadonk of yours? TRAVESTY!

meow 06-28-2006 11:44 PM

i would have said 'then i choose not to tip'

if he refused to come upstairs and the food was probably cold after dealing with all that bullshit, i don't think you should have tipped any more...

but i'm cheap so who knows

yo soy el mejor 06-28-2006 11:53 PM

i always tip well. these people have a horrible job and they appreciate and need decent tips. tipping below 15% is pathetic unless youre actually upset about something

also, they say 20% is the new 15%...

pink_ribbon_scars 06-28-2006 11:54 PM

i'll be goddamned if i'm giving the pizza guy 20% on top of the $3 delivery free. that's preposterous.
