chick thread: bitch about dresses (or support them if you'd like)

1 Attachment(s)
do you women wear dresses? i wish i could wear dresses but i feel so uncomfortable in them. i generally feel at least sort of self confident, but if you put me in a dress i am the least self confident person in the world. i know bluestar wears lots of dresses but she's also superthin, but then again she feels like she's overweight... [new theory: maybe the dresses make her feel overweight. i, however, doubt this.]

is anyone else like me and feels fine in skirts but awful in dresses?

does anyone have their eye on a pretty dress? this thread was inspired by this one. there's no way i will buy it but man oh man would i love to own it and look good in it.

Everything in moderation.

mirrar 08-29-2005 04:20 PM

for some reason, i always feel a little overdressed in dresses, but not with skirts. i also have a hard time finding dresses that i even like.

bardy 08-29-2005 04:24 PM

I love dresses but I don't wear them often. I usually feel pretty confident when I wear them. But I can't get spaghetti strapped/halter ones because I need to be able to wear a bra--so finding a good dress is kind of pain. And I am also short so the length has to be just right or I look like a midget.

Krazee's Ghost 08-29-2005 04:25 PM

I feel the same way. The only things that ever make me feel self conscious about my appearance are clothes and my hair.

I just recently re-discovered my love for skirts...but I think mainly the reason is because with skirts, you can mix and match. With dresses you can't really do that. You wear the dress and you're always wearing that same outfit.

Plus I love wearing long skirts and I haven't really ever seen a long dress I like that isn't some crazy gothic thing I'd never wear outside of Halloween.

Dead 08-29-2005 04:26 PM

I don't like a dress that has a waist band like the one pictured above, that's ugly to me.

Sam and Mike 08-29-2005 04:27 PM

I LOVE wearing dresses. I find them to be so comfortable and so easy to wear, particularly ones that can be dressed up or dressed down. And, on my "fat" days, I find empire waist dresses that fall away from the body to be the best thing possible to wear. And, on days when I don't feel like spending any time to get ready (ponytail and no makeup), wearing a dress just makes me feel more presentable and good about myself.

This is the dress that I tend to wear the most often...

I usually wear it with flip-flops and a denim jacket if needed. Casual and comfy.

I desperately want to own this dress. However, it is sold out everywhere and will not be in stock again until the end of October.

I also have my eye on this dress...

This dress is most likely going to be my birthday gift from my mom (it has a deep V back)...

This dress arrived in the mail for me today...
http://www.jcrew.com/images/nov299/b...423_WC1994.jpg

This is the dress I wore when I got married in Vegas...
http://www.jcrew.com/images/newshots...434_FA05_m.jpg

I also really like this dress...
http://www.jcrew.com/images/newshots...001_FA05_m.jpg

And this dress (but, I don't think this dress would look that good on my body, this style tends to look better on fuller-busted, curvy women)...

But yeah, for me, the best places to purchase dresses are J.Crew, Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic. I have a strong preference for solid color dresses that do not require me to wear a bra.

I disagree. I can take most of my dresses and pair them with flip-flops, an everyday purse, and a denim jacket and run out and do everyday errands. I can take those same dresses and pair them with heels, a clutch, and some nice jewelery and go out for a night on the town. The little things really do make an outfit...and they can change the outfit dramatically and make it a completely new outfit.

Yeah but see, I don't wear denim, I don't have any accessories to dress it up or dress it down. I have hemp necklaces and a mushroom purse. On my professional dressy days I have a cheap black purse I bought from target for $9. I don't like wearing heels unless I have to...in fact the only shoes I pretty much wear right now are either pink flip flops or brown ones.

You're definitely right, but my wardrobe's just not made for dresses.

Krazee's Ghost 08-29-2005 04:39 PM

I would totally wear this one though:

edit: paper-mâché /ˌpeɪpə- $ ˌpeɪpər/
a soft substance made from a mixture of paper, water, and glue, which becomes hard when it dries and is used for making pots and other objects

And by the way, Liz, thanks for the link :(

i know. :noway: the awesome thing is that when i go to the store and try it on, none of it looks good on me. that would normally disappoint me but since i think it's terribly overpriced it's actually a good thing.

also i think a lot of it seems sorta cheaply made even though it is priced like it's finely made.

Krazee's Ghost 08-29-2005 05:20 PM

$328?!! :(

Well that's a good thing, then!! Haha...but man, its really like they took everything I like about clothes and made them for me! Where is this store so that I may go in and have my dreams shattered for a good reason, too?

bardy 08-29-2005 05:24 PM

Rampage has awesome dresses for reasonable prices. I wouldnt say they have the highest quality but the dresses are fun for a season or two.

Rampage

I have one like this, sort of:

Yeah I love looking through Anthropologie catalogs but none of that stuff looks good on me. The quality of the clothing is so cheap anyway... I like urban outfitters a lot better, it still had crap quality but it is a lot cheaper.

Well, I do own an Anthropologie wallet/purse because it was on sale for $30, marked down from $80. Blah.
