I think you have to hold the play and center buttons for 5 seconds or so.

I really wish the fucker had an off switch or something. I hate having to hold play down to shut it off.

this iPod thing is a mystery. my computer will charge my iPod,but my iPod is "not connected" according to iTunes. I've never had a problem before. i realize that my computer being entirely fucked up could be a contributing factor.

Thing is, the thing is so sensitive sometimes I turn it off and turn it on almost instantly. If I shut it off, it should stay off.

The exact same thing is happening to me right now. Windows says that the USB device isn't recognized or has malfunctioned or whatever, but isn't the iPod getting charged from there anyway? It suggests that I replace my USB device, and I'm not even altogether certain what a USB even is :embarass:. So yeah, I can't update my iPod either.

It might have something to do with the fact that my computer had recently been standing in about a centimetre of water due to my basement being flooded from a particularly vicious thunderstorm in the area. I didn't think the water level got up high enough to affect anything inside the computer but apparently the entire situation was meant to be as inconvenient for me as possible.

until reading this thread I had no idea you could even turn off the iPod manually. I always just leave mine alone for a while, and it shuts off by itself.

i'm having exactly the same problem and i've tried EVERYTHING but no luck

i'm going to have to send it in to get fixed.

You could also set the "sleep" option to appear in the main menu and just select it.

well this thread has not turned out to be very encouraging. i have my iPod and cord at work with me today, i'll let you know if i make any progress.



and esty, i have the same problem as you. 50% of the tme when i turn my ipod off, i accidentally turn it right back on, and i think it's dumb and annoying, too. i mean, i can deal with it, but it is bad design.

Why dont you guys just put it on "hold" after shutting it down? Thats what I do.

i mean, like, the SECOND i turn it off it turns back on because i don't lift my finger off the button quickly enough. that is, there is no time to put it on hold. i do put it on hold when i get it successfully turned off.

when i read those, i always have to think of this story by Stanislav Lem about that robot, that was the only one that survived some tragedy onboard of some spaceship. He remembered the last communication between members of the spaceship, as they were hitting the pipes in Morse code. So the memory of the robot provided the clue to the fate of the spaceship as from time to time the robot started to talk in those snippets of communication. I just can't remember the name of the story. :(

I just realized I've actually never seen Solaris by Tarkovsky.

I can guarantee you will need to send it in for service. In a few days the image of an iPOD with a sad face will appear on your screen and it will have a website on it. When you go to the website it will say you may need to send it in for service.

that's okay, I am on the other hand totally illiterate about contemporary American culture. It always sucks when my friends here start talking about some Seinfeld stuff (what they seem to be doing with increasing frequency lately) and I am totally out as I've never seen a single episode.
