Now there's a family activity I hope I never picture again...

Yeah, my mother lives there and my girlfriend had never been, so we went on
a road trip from Christchurch through the central South Island (which I'd
never seen — Lake Pukaki is the most amazing shade of blue in perhaps the
history of ever) and did all the touristy stuff like going up Bob's Peak on the
gondolas and whatever.

Only bad part was some bastard who side-swiped our car while we
were off grabbing some lunch in Geraldine — bit of a surprise when we got back —
all they left was a big indentation in front of the driver's door and a tonne of
white paint. Cheers, guys.

It's magical.

Actually I think its brightness has something to do with a there being a high concentration of glacier-ground rock particles suspended in the water; as a result it reflects more sunlight than your usual ordinary non-magical lake.
