Any artists with a more stunning fall?

What other artists/bands of 90's SP caliber have embarrassed themselves, destroyed their reputations, or otherwise been as cringe-worthy as Billy has?

teh b0lly!!1 05-10-2017 01:18 PM

you know i genuinely absolutely cannot think of anyone

cardiac 05-10-2017 01:22 PM

The closest I can come up with is Guns n' Roses and even that is getting a happy ending of sorts (not artistically obviously, but they're making a fuck ton of money again at least).

Shadaloo 05-10-2017 02:21 PM

Al Jourgensen and Marilyn Manson both spring to mind; the main difference being they've put out albums some people out there actually enjoy, for what that's worth.

I've actually thought about this question a lot. I can't think of any other band with a fall quite like the Pumpkins. I've been a fan since 1992 but because of circumstance I didn't get to see them till 2010. I have seen them every year since then as well. Each passing year was fewer and fewer people till 2015 In Plainsong show. Ever since the reformation Billy has managed to run the ship further into the ground. He had a real chance to revitalize the band during the 07-09 era. I am a big fan of the sets, the performances (musically) and the material (live and studio). His mouth and attitude just ruined it. His thinking and decision making are just bizarre and very self-sabotaging.

Present day Marilyn Manson is like a poor man’s version of himself. He doesn’t compare to the sort of body-snatcher behavior Corgan has exhibited.

redbreegull 05-10-2017 03:42 PM

IMO this perception is heavily biased by how good we perceive SP to have been originally because obviously we are mostly super-fans

there are lots of classic rock acts who have been just as embarrassing as BC after their prime

redbreegull 05-10-2017 03:43 PM

I mean Ritchie Blackmore plays renaissance fairs

Ram27 05-10-2017 04:50 PM

Yeah I can't think of anyone either but that may just be because we're paying so much attention to SP and are emotionally invested

FoolofaTook 05-10-2017 05:43 PM

Not Boris.

That's 4 shure.

Yeah was gonna mention them ^ (***edit*** Counting Crows)... Not that they're of SP's caliber, but they still had a similar level of fame.

Weezer shares a lot of similarities (of course I've recently documented that)

Collective Souls another one that comes to mind. Soundgardens latest album blew chunks, Alice in Chains are pretty lame with the new singer, but they still get nominated for grammy's and shit..

Pretty much the bottom line is the question should be: who now isn't an embarrassment from that genre and the list is small... Foo Fighters, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Dinosaur Jr.... Probably about it...

MyOneAndOnly 05-10-2017 06:18 PM

do the dead ones count?

you started out ok but then seem to have shown no understanding of the topic

fuzzyroes 05-10-2017 06:20 PM

It's of course not an exact science, but RBG's actually right this time. If you talk to general music fans, most still hold SP in high regard and paid no attention to the debacles that came later.

That's the beauty of rock and roll... Take a band like Queen, they put a lot of cringe-worthy awful bullshit out after their glory years and nobody remembers that or holds that against them anymore...

fuzzyroes 05-10-2017 06:23 PM

And to be fair, Billy's only true awful embarrassment was really Teargarden. Oceania and Monuments while not great aren't anything to be embarrassed about.

I think it's just the steady decline that people find so fascinating... Cause it really seems like there was a steady decline from Adore on that hit a boiling point at Teargarden. -(Even though I personally like Zeitgeist, I still realize that most don't.)

reprise85 05-10-2017 06:41 PM

Oceania is OK, but Monuments is a pile of trash

Seriously, this ^ is a thing that happened. See for yourselves (or perhaps don't?)

FlamingGlobes 05-10-2017 08:07 PM

They were always a shit band but I truly TRULY feel for the other musicians in the band whose careers got tainted by that POS.

Exactly. And if Bowie did it, it would be a masterpiece.

redbreegull 05-10-2017 11:39 PM

really though Billy Corgan has put out some really embarrassing bad music and done some really embarrassing things, but it's not worse than most of his own idols. I think the most embarrassing thing about him is that he repeated the same pattern as all these assholes from the 70s instead of wising up

Jesus Cambodia 05-11-2017 10:39 AM

Musically his output could have been worse, sure. But don't forget about hiring a teenage drummer, the ridiculous wrestling shit, Siddhartha, trying to sell garbage photos/postcards/whatever, being an alt-right Alex Jones dumbfuck, dating current nazi and whore Tila Tequila.. Um, am I missing anything?
