Band(s)/Artist(s) nobody else but you seems to ever like

I mean of course this is a bit of an overstatement, if nobody else liked whatever band/artist, you probably wouldn't even know about them. I mean people you know. I mean a band/artist that you really like and who in general people you know seemed to either dislike maybe even hate or at least just don't care for. And if they didn't know about them, maybe you tried to introduce them to it and they didn't really get it or thought they were anything special.

I think for me that would have to be Altered Images, scottish post-punk but mainly new-wave/pop from the early 80's who's biggest claim to fame in North America probably is to have been on the Sixteen candles soundtrack. They're very pop, the voice of the singer seems to get on everyone's nerves (i can see easily why, it's affected to sound naive, in fact i would probably define the band's sound as a whole with that word) and the lyrics are pretty simple if not vapid. In the Uk the song happy birthday (the one on the sixteen candles soundtrack) charted at no2 and all three of their albums (the last which is actually pretty rubbish) charted in the top 25 but today nobody gives a fuck.

I mean i like them enough that i would rate them in my top 10 bands easy and i'd say that musically i am very influenced by their sound (which isn't entirely original, but somehow is better than some of their influences to me). I found out about them maybe 7 years ago, on gf's ipod which she had lent to me, and i remember telling her how great i thought they were and even she, who had their "best of' on her ipod, seemed to think i was getting a bit carried away...

discussing music just creates too much tension unless its to chime in with agreement but otherwise i tend to avoid those discussions now because people get ass bleeds and martyr syndrome when name dropping bands. i just wanna enjoy the music i like without having to tell anyone to make sure they know. one can stalk last.fm or youtube viewing history if that interested. gone are the days of having to scrawl all the bands names on a trapper keeper and patch up a jean jacket to make sure everyone knows what obscure tastes i have.

some people in their thirties are not over that yet.

Myself i used to have pins, band pins. also some movies related one. i still have them and like they're nice but i can't see myself putting them on my bag or jackets anymore.... i dunno, they're something sad about advertising the music you listen to on your clothes/accessories when you're like nearing 40.

The exploding boy 09-28-2015 12:57 PM

even band shirts im a bit ambivalent about now

Trotskilicious 09-28-2015 01:24 PM

I like them because i need tees more than vinyl

The exploding boy 09-28-2015 01:26 PM

to be fair, what my t-shirts DO advertise isn't much better (and certainly no more "grownup", in fact less in most cases) than bands....not at all. Maybe i need to buy band t shirts more...

Think I've talked about them before one of my favorite bands, the only one where I haven't met at least one person who knows them or enjoyed them upon exposure

i love it is my personal brand and how i identify myself, a very loosly defined genre with a awkward name that really just means IDGAF punk artists defying conventions and making something other than punk music. its my clear identity as a person, a post punk person. something that has never existed. i have mythologized a time and place that existed a decade before i was born but somehow i identify with it genuinely more than music from my peers. Im possibly somewhete on the autism spectrum

Trotskilicious 09-28-2015 08:48 PM

sometimes i wonder if my fascination with DDG is partly because of my penis and how they are all pale black haired dreamboats wearing black clothes

but then i listen to the tunes and realize thats not the entire reason

noyen 09-28-2015 10:10 PM

I own a ton of black band tees though so I'm a bit of a hypocrite. I was getting way into ddg and had no idea what they looked like. I actually assumed they were portly northwest girls who may be bikers and wear fake mustaches to the bar. I was glad to be wrong. They're all fucking beauties. But really, I'd still like the music if they were pygmy mutants.

I tend not to discuss bands because no one has ever heard of the bands I listen to and it just causes this awkward conversation where people pretend they give a fuck what I say.

Yah that too. Always have those situations where someone comes across some group or artist I've been into for decades or some shit and they "I think you might like this! I found them cuz Kat Von D and Amanda Palmer BOTH had a T-shirt on their Instagram page so I looked them up on Spotify" blast me and I end up being that dude who is too elitist to acknowledge it and engage the convo. Like legendary pink dots dude, you would maybe take it to an individual level and bring up ka spel or tear garden territory and then they don't know who skinny puppy is either and its all pointless.

Th' Faith Healers

I wish I had buttons and/or shirts of theirs.

At the library just now I talked to a stranger about the Lucinda Williams concert because he saw my shirt of hers. It wasn't so bad. We didn't become friends over it, or anything

Sonic Johnny 09-29-2015 12:55 AM

I'm just gonna assume the question is "most underrated artists" and so:

Drive Like Jehu (CRIMINALLY underrated! One of the best and most important rock bands of the 90s!)
Wipers
Big Business
Black Sheep Wall
Arms and Sleepers
Angelic Process
KEN mode

Up until 18 months ago I would have said Shlohmo but he's doing beats for Jeremih now so he's gotten big enough that he doesn't count. Same with Four Tet

Elphenor 09-29-2015 08:07 AM

Trots a lot of "my peers" identify with cultures not of their time
