Flashback (2014):

Quote:

Looking forward to the eventual reissue of a restored and recompiled MACHINA, work has begun on transfers from the original 24 track tapes, as well as a host of select live shows. The effort will be unprecedented for Smashing Pumpkins et al, as Billy Corgan has indicated plans to put the album not only in it’s original and intended double/triple album sequence, but has designs on commissioning new remixes of all materials as well. The intention he says is clear: to present MACHINA in the original form in which it was written; or in his words, ‘as a theatrical narrative.’

Other possibilities of coalescing the story exist: including the addition of extant materials such acoustic alternates, re-contextualized soundtrack pieces, and use of spoken word to create an immersive experience.”

“I’m also not opposed to asking current artists to participate, singing songs as such on the compositions meant for other character’s voices,” Billy adds. “Finishing what the band started so long ago, and we just didn’t have the strength to end.”

Just give us clean mixes of the M2 tracks in the outtake cd’s and I’ll be happy. Plus some cleaned up Arising and United Center recordings.

If he’s re-listing tracks and putting out a standard remastered single album, in addition to the box set, he’d do well to completely change the tracklisting and put the best of M2 on it, in place of the worst from M1.

There are enough good tracks on Machine overall, so with the right mix and tracklist it would be recieved very well by influential critics like pitchfork etc.

This is the opposite of what he will do or what will happen, but I look forward to it none-the-less.

Forgotten Child 08-16-2018 04:31 AM

I've asked him if M2 was supposed to sound that dirty or is it due to the vinyl transfer we got.
+ if there are more GATMOG remixes and if they will be part of the reissue.

I think some muddiness and the ‘blown out’ effect is intentional, but compounded by the vinyl transfer, it just gets in the way of some songs eg. Real Love, Home. Real Love didn’t sound any better on the Greatest Hits.

Getting clear, high quality remixed/mastered versions has been one of the holy grails since it leaked.

Funbags 08-16-2018 05:21 AM

Oh man, I am genuinely excited for this.

Shallowed 08-16-2018 05:26 AM

I think Machina II sounds fine

SP fans are spoiled.

pavementtune 08-16-2018 05:27 AM

does someone still have the original planned schedule of the reissues?

I can't remember what timeframe was announced, Gish came out November 2011.

Just wondering if it's been 4 or even more years now of checking in for this damn thing.

welp. time flies.

The campaign continues in 2012 with the release of 1995's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness," the 1996 box set "The Aeroplane Flies High" and 1998's "Adore," while 2000's "Machina/The Machines of God" and "Machina II: The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music" will be packaged together in 2013. A best-of retrospective is also due that year.

Shallowed 08-16-2018 05:37 AM

I thought it was supposed to be like, one or two a year, which they actually stuck to until Adore

It’s good that the deaf community are being represented on Netphoria.

eviltimeban 08-16-2018 06:58 AM

Definite remix of everything needed. Only a handful of Machina I tracks sound good as they are (TEG, SIYL, AOI for example).

Machina 2 tracks defo need a remix - Slow Dawn for example, sounds like a live in studio demo.

Slow Dawn sounds like it was recorded underwater, like a cassette in an old car stereo. Suits the song tbh, but will be cool to get a better mix.

It’s the fuzz on the other tracks though... nah. If MSOTS was “loud at any volume”, M2 was “The signal is weak and your speakers are fucked”.

The whole point of M2 is the blown out sound, and it most certainly serves songs like "Real Love". The murkiness of "Slow Dawn" suits it. I don't want that record to sound like Brothers in Arms or something. Do people complain about the mix on Psychocandy?

FoolofaTook 08-16-2018 09:01 AM

so billy's gonna get you guys to pay for something you already have

SO EXCITED!!!

Corgan's Bluff 08-16-2018 09:35 AM

Corgan said in an earlier Q&A that the original mixes of Machina I and II will be released at the reissue.
So buying the deLuxe edition one can finally throw away the lousy M II bootleg...

Better not watch, Billy... The lowest voting I've ever seen there:
