Clean Sheets and Fresh Flowers: Anne-Dog, Revisited
What were your initial reactions, given the state of your fandom and expectations/hopes for Adore at the time? Nuanced lyrical narrative? Hollow avant-jazz? The work of a mature songwriter? Boring as(s) shit? Did Annie-Dog affect your appreciation of the band/Billy, for better or for worse? Have your opinions/attitudes toward it changed over time? I'd love to know. |

I remember being all excited release day and bringing it home, doing a bunch of homework and listening to it. I was confused when I hit Annie Dog and found it weird and kinda boring.
I knew nothing about what had happened to the band from 1996 up to then, but what I remember most was flipping through the booklet when Shame started up, reading the lyrics, and piecing together right away that Jimmy had left because something awful had happened. Looked into it soon after. For a really long time I couldn't listen to Shame or For Martha because they just made me absolutely miserable. |
for a long time it was one of those songs i'd skip every single time.
then after a few years i gave it another shot, and i grew to really like it. i think it's a brave and rare moment to incl i like corgan's lazy morning vocals, before he even warmed up, and i like the way the lyrics are both very obvious in what they're about, yet they circle around the topic in strange, creative ways that are mostly left of center. and then you have Shame, Behold, Martha and Blank Page. |
btw it definitely made me respect Billy more, cause he's just the kind of artist to make these bold choices and take chances.
he had songs like LMGTWTY and Blissed & Gone ready to go, but he chose to inc |

I hated the arrangement and production on adore so Annie-Dog was the only song I enjoyed because it was so stripped down. It did make me respect Billy more because Adore came out during my first year at Uni. So I had moved on from high school and was living in a flat downtown, an Art Deco building. My room had a balcony where I used to smoke in the early hours of the morning feeling all grown up and reflective, and Annie Dog was the song from Adore that I connected with now that I was taking drugs and having casual sex and still having to get my geology field reports done. I listened to SD and Pisces more than Adore that year. Didn't like the rest of it. I remember listening to Wes Montgomery, Air, PJ Harvey and Beethoven. Annie Dog was the only song I listened to if I put on Adore.
