it's about the reunion u guise

If bill can shake his "first perceptions" of himself (quit obsessing over who he was in the 90s and what it meant), perhaps he can escape "this," i.e. the slow sad nosedive of his career since breaking up Zwan, and by joining with "someone else," he can reunite with his True Love (SP)

bill is asking someone (or something!) to "run to him." not walk, RUN. Who can it be? (answer at the end)

bill was lean but spoiled it by trying to coast on "where he's from." he knows he needs to return to the desert where all wise men (e.g. Jesus) went to fast. bill hopes if he can correct the lifestyle that's dulled his mind and body, his "desert rose," his "tempered sage" might run back2him

this, arguably the best lyrical image in the song (and on MTAE as a whole) causes our hearts to break for bill. ever since that final night at the metro, when james walked out without saying goodbye, bill has been the lonely wanderer of a snowy night, spying golden rectangles upon the shadowy drifts, longing for the light in every window.

o what wistful pangs ... how can bill make it back inside, where there's warmth! friendship!

bill is beginning to admit he's deceived himself the last 16 years to assume "his tone" = "the SP sound" and that his guitar skills/voice would Always Get Him Back On The Radio, no matter who he surrounded himself with ... deep inside, bill hates himself for this, and hopes to find the courage to abandon the safety net of "his tone/his voice/HIMSELF" = "SP"

"no other door" to a reunion was possible without bill's reconciling with james. bill is learning that it's easier to carry "love" than his "rage" at james in his old age, as "strange"/foreign as that "love" may feel after so many lonely years plumbing spite and bile
