digital ash in a digital urn (2005) - bright eyes

recently listened to this again after having forgotten about it for at least a decade. some of the songs really hold up and sound great.

anyone else like this album?

I put the past into the ground
I saw the future as a cloud
If there's still time to turn around
I'm going to

It's just one day I fell asleep
and now all day all night I dream
I am the first one I deceive
If I can make myself believe
the rest is easy

I still like it lots but I have to go to work. Let's talk about it later yeah?

MplsTaper 01-22-2019 02:37 PM

One of the best Bright Eyes albums imo.

I keep trying to get into Bright Eyes but it never quite clicks for me. What am I doing wrong?

wHATcOLOR 01-22-2019 03:11 PM

only a guess, but you might be too old. if you listen to it first during those younger ages when your emotions run super high and the melodrama fits how you feel, it can really grab you and stay with you and earn a special place in your heart. and then even years later when you're more even keeled, from time to time it is great to return to.

i dunno, what are your chief complaints? too melodramatic? too boring? for me it's a lyric and emotion thing, and on this album in particular, it's a real nice sonic departure from most of his other stuff, which i find interesting and well done

fwiw i didn't really like Bright Eyes when i'd tried it out as a teenager

but then again, i didn't always like Smashing Pumpkins either

wHATcOLOR 01-22-2019 04:10 PM

so what do i know. redbreegull, then i don't know what to tell you man, maybe you're not old enough!

D. 01-22-2019 04:55 PM

I actually like Digital Ash better than Wide Awake. Song for song better tbh.

I have very intense memories associated with DADU too.

redbreegull 01-22-2019 04:58 PM

song for a song, you say?

MplsTaper 01-22-2019 05:16 PM

is Tyler back from work yet or what

Alice 01-23-2019 12:00 AM

I just got back. I'm about to take my dog out and then post some things about this record

Alice 01-23-2019 12:08 AM

I listened to it on the way to/from work so I could provide the freshest possible take. I think I'm gonna listen to it again right now

reprise85 01-23-2019 12:17 AM

i like BE a lot. got into them while i was a junkie. digital ash was never my favorite though, and it's still kinda meh to me. definitely not good as i'm wide awake, it's morning.

funny story kinda, i first listened to this band because i was at the library looking through CDs and IWAIM caught my eye.

and of course LIFTED and fevers and mirrors are amazing as well

Alice 01-23-2019 12:21 AM

I remember buying this with Wide Awake when they came out and it took a while to grow on me. Wide Awake was my favorite Bright Eyes record for years and I played it a lot. But now I listen to Digital Ash far more often. I still really enjoy every song on this record. And it was cool to hear something different from him. I just wish he would have kept going with this instead of taking the direction he did with Cassadaga

Alice 01-23-2019 12:23 AM

I saw them on the tour for Digital Ash and I remember being disappointed it wasn't the Wide Awake tour. Now I wish I could experience it again cause I think I'd get a lot more out of it. They played with The Faint and I remember them being really fun

Alice 01-23-2019 12:24 AM

Also Wide Awake has higher highs for me but it also has songs I don't really care about. Digital Ash doesn't have any

Alice 01-23-2019 12:28 AM

Dang the end of Time Code is really good you guys

When the smoke came out our mouths
on all those hooded sweatshirt walks
we were a stroke of luck
we were a goldmine
they gutted us

Now you have your cake
Don't hesitate
Come on just do it
Come on just do it
Put it in your mouth
There is only now
Tomorrow has to wait
