Nine Inch Nails - Add Violence
Never thought that my past love for NIN would be woken up again, but it seems to have happened. Not The Actual Events was cool enough, this one is probably better.

I've listened to three tunes off this so far and i'm really excited. Trent has been courting getting interesting again for a while now but this stuff is like full-blown "the magic is back" grade good.

Between this and NTAE, I'm starting to think this is NIN's second coming. Fantastic EPs.

n/m found it

conspiracy theory time: "simulation on" was taped off at some point but now the tape has been taken off.

this is pretty good! surprisingly profound video, too |
The Background World is probably the craziest thing Trent's recorded.

it was basically a collection of remixes and reconstructions of songs from The Fragile, but because i listened to it a lot, when i tried listening to The Fragile it sounded backwards to me. hard to explain. i should probably try it again tbh |
this new ep is better than the last one but its still pretty formulaic. NIN has been on autopilot since 2007

too late

reznor is a pretty talented musician obviously when it comes to making neat sounds, but as far as composition he's pretty basic bitch. I can pull out the same melodies and chord progressions out of many NIN songs |

this is so on point |
lol
"but first let's listen to this weird sound" |
trent was almost never about having incredible songwriting chops, it was more about his aesthetic. he created a believable world for his music to exist in - ugly, dark, depraved, harrowing. intense. i think that's why he's been able to go on for so long and still have a lot of people 'believe' him. it's because his niche allows it. i think the raw passion and emotion he poured into his first records (well, the ones i know anyway) is what made them so great, but now, as you guys said, it's more on autopilot. which is fine, honestly. the same can be said about almost any aging artist. it's just that trent's niche allows him to still sound almost like he did when he was younger, especially if you're not a big music fan who digs deeply for the details.

That "Less Than" song is essentially just the "Hand that Feeds" song but with an arpeggiated synth underneath. It's not bad, but it's been done. Reading the YouTube analysis from fans is a good laugh:
"Trent is getting old, but he hasn't lost anything. Everything that made his early work great is still fully intact, buried in his brilliant mind, and this song is proof. His newer work has been great too, just in different, exploratory ways, but this song shows he can still bring it way back to that level any time he feels like it." |
I saw Men Without Hats last month for free. Guy was up there dancing around in a silver shirt and shades, in good shape, plainly having the time of his life. Huge crowd, lot of fun. The place Billco wishes he could be.
Anyway, Less Than is also just like THTF in that it's completely of place on the album it's attached to. With this supposedly being part 2 of a 3 EP series I can't see how they won't re-release it with a re-adjusted track order. NTAE straight into AV is disjointed as hell. |
It's great. He's great.
Can't wait for riot fest. |
Also calling the slip autopilot is blasphemous.
