Nine Inch Nails - Add Violence

Never thought that my past love for NIN would be woken up again, but it seems to have happened. Not The Actual Events was cool enough, this one is probably better.

I've listened to three tunes off this so far and i'm really excited. Trent has been courting getting interesting again for a while now but this stuff is like full-blown "the magic is back" grade good.

I honestly haven't listened to much since Year Zero but after hearing "This Isn't the Place" I'm going to have to agree. Just pulled up "Less Than" as well. Thanks for posting this.

Between this and NTAE, I'm starting to think this is NIN's second coming. Fantastic EPs.

slunken 07-20-2017 09:39 PM

n/m found it

slunken 07-20-2017 09:40 PM

conspiracy theory time: "simulation on" was taped off at some point but now the tape has been taken off.

i haven't listened to NIN since The Downward Spiral

this is pretty good!

surprisingly profound video, too

ninsp 07-20-2017 11:08 PM

The Background World is probably the craziest thing Trent's recorded.

smashingjj 07-21-2017 03:42 AM

it's funny actually, when i was getting to NIN as a highschooler, i went to the record store and caught sight of the new NIN lp at the time - Things Falling Apart.

it was basically a collection of remixes and reconstructions of songs from The Fragile, but because i listened to it a lot, when i tried listening to The Fragile it sounded backwards to me. hard to explain.

i should probably try it again tbh

slunken 07-21-2017 10:51 PM

this new ep is better than the last one but its still pretty formulaic. NIN has been on autopilot since 2007

slunken 07-21-2017 10:53 PM

too late

agree. it's still perfectly listenable and better than most stuff, but he used to be vital

reznor is a pretty talented musician obviously when it comes to making neat sounds, but as far as composition he's pretty basic bitch. I can pull out the same melodies and chord progressions out of many NIN songs

TuralyonW3 07-22-2017 12:34 AM

lol

"but first let's listen to this weird sound"

teh b0lly!!1 07-22-2017 04:03 AM

trent was almost never about having incredible songwriting chops, it was more about his aesthetic. he created a believable world for his music to exist in - ugly, dark, depraved, harrowing. intense. i think that's why he's been able to go on for so long and still have a lot of people 'believe' him. it's because his niche allows it. i think the raw passion and emotion he poured into his first records (well, the ones i know anyway) is what made them so great, but now, as you guys said, it's more on autopilot. which is fine, honestly. the same can be said about almost any aging artist. it's just that trent's niche allows him to still sound almost like he did when he was younger, especially if you're not a big music fan who digs deeply for the details.

noyen 07-22-2017 04:28 AM

loving it

That "Less Than" song is essentially just the "Hand that Feeds" song but with an arpeggiated synth underneath. It's not bad, but it's been done. Reading the YouTube analysis from fans is a good laugh:

"Trent is getting old, but he hasn't lost anything. Everything that made his early work great is still fully intact, buried in his brilliant mind, and this song is proof. His newer work has been great too, just in different, exploratory ways, but this song shows he can still bring it way back to that level any time he feels like it."

Shadaloo 07-25-2017 11:36 AM

I saw Men Without Hats last month for free. Guy was up there dancing around in a silver shirt and shades, in good shape, plainly having the time of his life. Huge crowd, lot of fun. The place Billco wishes he could be.

Anyway, Less Than is also just like THTF in that it's completely of place on the album it's attached to.

With this supposedly being part 2 of a 3 EP series I can't see how they won't re-release it with a re-adjusted track order. NTAE straight into AV is disjointed as hell.

Eulogy 07-31-2017 07:16 PM

It's great. He's great.

Can't wait for riot fest.

Eulogy 07-31-2017 07:17 PM

Also calling the slip autopilot is blasphemous.

Trent on autopilot is still good. He's just not evolving a songwriter. At least he's not devolving like a certain fat baldy

I was ready to concede a point here but the fact that it's essentially a bad cover of one NIN song undermines the whole premise imo
