Christmas movies

It's that time of year where all my middle aged mummy friends are dying to watch Love Actually for the millionth fucking time and nobody will watch Bad Santa with me.

Anyone want to share some favourites or recommendations?

vixnix 11-28-2017 11:58 AM

I actually watch Bad Santa for the same reason they watch Love Actually. It is a terrible, commercial, feel-good movie. Just with swearing and violence and sex.

LaBelle 11-28-2017 12:11 PM

Oh I have a few unorthodox picks:

Silent Night, Deadly Night - Murderous santa!

Gremlins - It should be a seasonal mainstay. The sob story of dad dying on the chimney dressed as santa basically makes it.

Die Hard - It's a great action film and takes place during christmas. To me it qualifies :D

Batman Returns - Batman and Catwoman even share a moment under a mistletoe

Nightmare Before Christmas - Actually works as both a halloween and a Christmas movie.

MarquisInSpades 11-28-2017 12:14 PM

Elf! 2003! Will Ferrell! It's probably my favorite Christmas movie haha.

did your middle aged mummies follow you to singapore?

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 12:20 PM

i dunno, man. i only watch christmas movies when i spend christmas at my parents. i wake up in the morning, walk to the living room and turn on the television and find a movie because you know one is one and you won't have to change the channel.

this is how i saw an hour of love actually and is was dumb actually

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 12:21 PM

so over a christmas story

MarquisInSpades 11-28-2017 12:22 PM

I never got why anyone liked Love Actually. I cringed when I watched it. So fucking cheesy and crappy. Only thing it could brag about was a good cast. And the whole conversation between Martin Freeman and that lady while shooting a porno was so fucking unrealistic. And the whole relationship between Hugh Grant and his (supposedly) "fat" secretary. Wtf?

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 12:23 PM

i don't believe actually anyone is dying to watch it for the millionth time

vixnix 11-28-2017 12:33 PM

Well apparently middle-aged mothers are everywhere. Singapore is full of them - there's a FB group called Real Singapore Expat Wives with like 18000 members and the Singapore expat wives/mothers I know were talking just today about how they can't wait to watch Love Actually because it's that time of year. Really nice ladies, I mean...friends of mine I guess. I said I wasn't into Love Actually and the movie I like to watch at Christmas is Bad Santa, and the vibe I was feeling was that nobody was gonna curl up in their jammies with popcorn and watch with me.

Pete will, at least. It's such a sweet story, really. If you can look past the blasphemy and the swearing and everything.

LaBelle 11-28-2017 12:33 PM

Go is another fun not traditional christmas movie. It's painfully 90s tho.

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 12:35 PM

lol Go

oh god

Yes, actually someone mentioned Die Hard, today! I haven't watched in in 20 years and don't remember anything about it.

My kids love Gremlins. I can stomach watching it once a year but they've played that card already and now have no more ace to play.

Haven't seen Silent Night, Deadly Night! Should really check that out.

I would never have watched it. But returning to university one year, after summer, I found myself sitting next to a guy on the plane who had just made it into law school, as well. We got talking about the exam paper, and about our other degrees - he was finishing up a BA in French and German and we were talking about Camus in French and Hesse in German and what I had missed out on. And then he asked if I had seen Love Actually, and I said no - and he must have sensed that I probably wasn't going to see it. And he said you know, it looks like it's going to be terrible, but actually, it's really good.

And you know, in its own way, it's a great movie. I just have no desire to watch it again from start to finish. At this time of year I'm likely to catch a few scenes on TV before I change channels, and that really is enough for me.

But Bad Santa, I mean I actually look forward to putting that on every year. It truly gets me into that Christmas spirit.

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 12:56 PM

it's still an expression from cards

"they only had the ace to play"

or

"that guy is gonna lose. he has no more ace to play"

vixnix 11-28-2017 01:10 PM

Wouldn't it be plural though. No more aces to play.

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 03:16 PM

it would but it's an expression. nothing we can do about it.

yo soy el mejor 11-28-2017 03:18 PM

he has an ace. i mean, just cause there are two in a deck doesn't mean you always reference two. if i have one ace and you have one ace, then i only have one ace and when it's gone i've no more ace to play

Mickey's Christmas Carol is sweet.

Nice list. I also really like Scrooged around this time of year.

President Hugh Grant's secretary was HOT.

That's all I remember from that movie.

Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it.

It's A Wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies, period. The themes of guilt, suicide, and gradual redemption via glimpsing an alternate universe where you never existed go right to my core. Make me cry every tiem, even
