Omg Omg Omg BLOCKBUSTER LIVES!!! (well, sorta...))

When Blockbuster closed a guy in Pennsylvania started his own video rental place in the same building. It's essentially the exact same layout and inside of the Blockbuster that came before it! This place is still operational and apparently very popular!

It's got the same paper-thin carpets, same shelving, it's by all intents and purposes a Blockbuster video in 2018!

See look, Blockbuster carpeting!

They have taken a few steps to modernize the place though. They paste ratings on the shelving units for customer convenience!

Nice to know that a blast from the past is still thriving in this day and age!

buzzard 02-02-2018 11:08 PM

Does it remind you of a time in your life when you were happier or something?

fuzzyroes 02-02-2018 11:09 PM

I just really dug going in that store. It was a cool place. I like buying physical media, and Blockbuster always had a cool selection and rotating layouts of cool stuff.

Mainstream Australian video stores sucked with content

Do you remember cruising through the comedy section with cover after cover having some shapely female legs in th3 foreground?

fuzzyroes 02-02-2018 11:59 PM

Haha late 80s and early 90's comedies were littered with box-art like that

I actually know I have one or 2 long forgotten comedies in my collection with box-art like that

slunken 02-03-2018 12:39 AM

fwiw they're called "late-night comedies"

example:

Close but the real thing has the legs on either side of the cover

Do busy men have the time to research what has become of the buildings formerly used by now-defunct retail chains?

i bet i still have unpaid late fees

redbreegull 02-03-2018 03:45 AM

in high school my sister's boyfriend had a friend who worked at Blockbuster and would just "fake" check them out to them, i.e. just give them the movies instead of actually checking them out, i.e. stealing.

at one point my sister had at least a hundred stolen blockbuster movies

qwerty sp 02-03-2018 03:47 AM

That’s a movie theft felony

wait, so what was the point of those sensor-like things you were forced to walk through, akin to the ones at a library? a scare tactic? ha! bastards!

redbreegull 02-03-2018 03:50 AM

I think it was something like disabling the security thing and actually checking out the movies was two different steps but I'm not entirely sure

redbreegull 02-03-2018 03:52 AM

oh no I remember. the security things only prevented people from walking out with movies in their clothes and stuff. once your movies were checked out, the person behind the counter moved them over to a special place on the counter on the OTHER side of the detectors

ilikeplanets 02-03-2018 03:57 AM

this is making me so grateful for netflix rn

butthurt 02-03-2018 04:12 AM

Who will post the parody thread?

Disco King 02-03-2018 04:52 AM

I remember the RFID chip falling out of a book in a bookstore while I was flipping through it, and thinking "man I could totally steal this book if I wanted to."

But I didn't because I would feel awful if I did.

is somebody gonna bring up the walmart milk incident or what?

teh b0lly!!1 02-03-2018 07:54 AM

let's just say it like it is though, these days the world is mostly run by massive, antagonizing corporations, and stealing does not hold the same weight it did 30 years ago

not saying that essentially stealing from blockbuster was ok, necessarily, but nowadays there could be very many forms of victimless thefts and i could give zero fucks if a corporation cries a little river for a missing 5$ item

ilikeplanets 02-03-2018 12:02 PM

i've accidentally stolen from walmart a few times. i've done it on purpose too, but somehow i feel guiltier about the accidental theft.
