It was supposed to be the last pumpkins song. It was the last song written for the Machinas. It's a song to the band, in disguise of a love song, or loss of love song.

"for every chemical you trade a piece of your soul with no return" could apply to d'arcy being a "mean spirited" drug addict.

"who you think you know doesn't know you at all. their drain is needless" could apply to james.

"someday we'll wave hello and wish we never waved goodbye to this romance" would apply to jimmy

I always thought the song applied to D'arcy the most, but I think that ultimately, like others have suggested, it's about the break up of the band as a whole.

It was written a few days before the Bridge School Benefit shows. I don't have my Machina booklet, so I don't remember how long they recorded it.

I always understood it that AoI was the last song written for Machina as well. "This Time" is definitely about the band. I seem to remember reading or hearing Billy mention it, but then I could be dreaming that up. My memory sucks.

let's say This Time was the last song written during the main recording sessions in Chicago, with Age Of Innocence being written at the last minute and recorded in LA, making it the really last song.

that only applies to the first MACHINA though. the timeline for some of the MACHINA II songs is unclear as far as i know.
