i NEED this

Toby 04-11-2012 12:04 AM

Wikipedia is far from credible tho

reprise85 04-11-2012 12:42 AM

find a better source then. it has an error rate similar to printed encyclopedias.

sure anyone can edit it but anyone can fix it too. and they do. believe me.

reprise85 04-11-2012 12:43 AM

Study: Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica

reprise85 04-11-2012 12:44 AM

if you are worried about credibility just follow the sources.

i appreciate the wikipedia vetting process, being that i edit it frequently. it is an active community and has strict rules on sourcing. there are lots of conflicts over content. and this all leads to big headaches for writers but a better encyclopedia for the public.

Elvis The Fat Years 04-11-2012 12:49 AM

all sources lead into my pants.

lol that's really old paradigm thinking dude jesus get with it

Trotskilicious 04-11-2012 03:59 AM

really there's nothing more annoying* than people who don't ever use wikipedia assuming it's not credible because anyone can edit it.

that means there are 5+ nerds checking every edit and verifying its accuracy.

I've checked history papers i did real research on to wiki and found that wiki's accuracy is supremely excellent. That was 5 years ago or so too, so the articles don't even exist anymore, they've been edited, fixed, updated and argued about to create a better product. If you think wiki is not credible then you don't get it.

Toby 04-11-2012 04:11 AM

Well perhaps I'll give Wikipedia another shot.

Toby 04-11-2012 05:06 AM

I just used Wikipedia to look up information ab the hunger games!

Trotskilicious 04-11-2012 07:10 AM

yes also its value as the pop culture trivia database cannot be understated

exactly. i have about 100 articles that notify me when someone updates and i will reverse anything not in line with wikipedia policy. that is vandalism (blatantly worthless edits), people who don't realize you HAVE to have a source (like you can know the sky is blue, but if no one's written on it in an academic paper you can't put it in wikipedia), and people pushing an agenda and ignoring all points of view on a subject.

this might sound really involved but it's not. it only takes a minute or two to check out sources of things posted, and most articles don't get updated very often. and a lot of updating is just copy-editing (fixing grammar and spelling etc)

reprise85 04-12-2012 08:57 AM

updating or creating articles is very involved and i've done a lot of that too, but not lately. it's basically graduate level work

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISSTD

like i made this article when i first started working on wikipedia, and so with learning how to reference things and wikipedia mark up code, it took me many hours. reminds me i need to do some more research on this

now it goes really fast.
